Latest video drivers? - Page 2

Update: got 6.3 to work. I think the new GUI is dumb. And slow. I dunno if I'm going to keep it or not. Seems stable so far. My trick was to configure it after installation but before restarting.

Just Delete the CCC (Control Panel) like I did, it will used the Old GUI and update the lastest drivers, that way you don't have to deal with that dumb looking GUI

Oh, duh, forgot about that. Great idea! ATi is turning into Adobe...Acrobat is so bloated because they feel they have to release a new version every year when version 4.0 worked fast and had everything (checkout Fox Reader...superfast PDF reader, none of the fluff, all of the function). I noticed that if you do a Custom install of the ATI stuff you can de-select CCC. I'm doing another fresh install later today, so I'll be sure to do that. I just uninstalled it off my current install and I'll see how it works out. I'm trying to get the right combination of latest drives and stability so I can make a nice driver pack.

Just an input on 6.3, since I am a real fan of ATI drivers (Omega is my reliable backup in case ATI screws up, always keep a version on my drive).

This is an 6.3 issue btw - after long hard testing and going thru pain, I come to realise that 6.3 works (and works real good) ONLY with FastWrites ON and AGP Write OFF. Previous version has no issue with FW OFF and/or AGP ON.
Well at least on my machine, and definitively w/o CCC. ATI tray tool rules :-)

anyone tried DNA Driver?

Latest update - mobility catalyst 6.4
well .. from ATI site ... after driver (no CCC) installation:
1. Slow (very) screen refreshing
2. Roll back to 6.3 - somehow it is being bastardised by the new drivers, so slow screen refreshing again
3. download the "normal" non-mobility catalyst 6.4 drivers from ATI
4. extract it
5. copy the mobility 6.4 CX_31490.inf to normal 6.4 CX_31959.inf (be sure to update the CatalogFile entry to reflect CX_34959.cat) - not doing this will result in losing the 1200x800 resolution!
6. use DHModTool3 (instructions at http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/)
7. installation successful
8. wow! one can not believe the extra details (& performance) in game, I was bowled over in my CoD2
9. leaving things at stock from the driver - no extra tweak

Good (to excellent) drivers, bad ATI mobility installation package.

10. do not forget to disable ATI Hotkey Poller and ATI Smart services, ATI always turn theses on with every driver update ...

cheers ...

If you use the ATI driver cleaner utility you can save a lot of headache installing the newer Catalyst drivers. No DHMod tool required. The Catalyst 6.4 installer worked fine for me on my M6805.

i m glad to hear that it works for ya. I have nothing but bad luck with the normal ati mobility catalyst since 6.3 - I did use driver cleaner and all, even registry cleaning as well. Being a fan of ati catalyst since long time, i believe that the ati team just kinda srews up due to many quick hardware annoncement - typical hardware alsways ahead of software.
If not for the big improvement in 6.4 i would have not updated the driver. So the dhmodtool is a good alternative, should anyone have had bad luck with the normal installer.

Did you use ATI's driver cleaner? It's called the software uninstall utility. There should be no registry settings left after you use it.

using both - driver cleaner pro and cat.uninstaller direct from ati site. like i mentioned, only since 6.3 - might have something to do with the new & improved packaging CCC, but :-) i m now just using the pure drivers with the "normal" advance options instead of the ati gui ...
i will wait for the next catalyst & try again with ati cleaner - i just have the feeling that this is pretty much the end of the line on driver improvements for 9600/9700 cards... Still, very very impressed with 6.4! Hats off to the ati soft team.

cheers ...
