MSN Messenger? Do you have antivirus software!? MSN Messenger is free.

I haven't used AIM so I guess I'll vote MSN.

Why don't you guys use AIM express if you're worried about the viruses and useless icons?

Hate to place the blame on your son but well, if you get a virus through MSN it's 'cause you clicked on something that you weren't supposed to. These things are usually messages from people that are sent to their whole list. A good antivirus/adware scan combo will take care of all of it. I've used MSN for years now and it runs without a hitch... at no charge.

I can't believe no one's said Yahoo yet. BY FAR THE VERY VERY BEST is Yahoo's instant messaging system. I've used AIM, ICQ and MSN and this is the best hands down. They have a lot better features (go to avatars.yahoo.com - they are sweet), are a lot more user-friendly and has a nice-to-look at and clean interface. AIM always has looked so prehistoric.

Whatever you do..PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go with Yahoo. haha I am a huge Yahoo fangirl. And Yahoo has a lot of users on there too. Usually most folks have one for AIM and another for Yahoo.

I've never once had any problems with Yahoo! even though I have a painfully old and slow emachines POS.

Seriously, download it and give it a try. I PROMISE YOU you will never go back.

UPDATE: Yahoo is planning on allowing users to IM folks with MSN:

What I found was AIM is very popular with Americans, but Canadians seem to favor MSN more... I use MSN mostly, hit up AIM once in a while to see what the folks south of the border are doing.

GAIM!!!....it now even as the NUDGE function for MSN....i don't understand why AIm is so popular with americans, it just really sucks, everyone else in world either uses MSN or Yahoo...

AIM sucks. So does MSN.

Yahoo is easily my favorite. Primary reason being message archiving. I use it for work, so I need to be able to dig up old messages on occasion.

And the smilies are better.

MSN can easily do that. With MSN Plus you can even encrypt them.
