springs on heatsinks

whats the point of the springs on the screws for the heatsinks? my last desktop was a p2 333, so i dont know but do desktop hs have springs too or is it a laptop thing?

Usually just a laptop thing. They're just there to add more force to the heatsink, to push down more and make a better, sturdier contact with the cpu or gpu core.

They help distribute the force. The screws alone do not put any pressure on the card, they actually screw in as far as they can before even touching the heatsink, the springs then provide an even force on the heatsink...

There have been similar solutions on other coolers.
