TX or SZ? Please Help me decide

Hi there,

Im contemplating getting the TX or the SZ.

Its for college, portability and general computing stuff.

Both are similar in price (Premium versions) Im just wondering what one to get. Its hard to go for the TX when the SZ has more power/performance vs price. But I love the look/feel of the TX!

However the SZ gives me the opportunity to play WoW on it - but I also have a desktop for that

TX = lighter compact, handy for traveling etc
SZ = small bit bigger with more power both GPU and CPU.

What is the size difference between the two? Is SZ much bigger than TX? Does anyone have a side by side photo?

I would like to hear peoples opinions on this!

Thanks Dave

I went with the TX. The SZ was just too big for me. I love it and take it all over, something I would not do as much if I had gone with SZ.

Just my two cents.

TX at about 1.3kg v SZ at about 1.7kg.
my shoulder decides it wants to carry less so i went TX

I don't know about you guys but I'm a guy with big hands and a TX is just to small for me. My s580 is awesome and I have no regrets. The new szs look cool too. I'd go sz Plus sz or s series are only like 4 lbs not that heavy

I'm 6'3" and just got the TX-750 less than a week ago. Typing, for me, is easier on the TX than on the SZ, but mainly due to feedback. So far I really like it. Super small, super portable and amazing battery life. This crazy thing got 7.5hrs on the "Reader" test in Battery Eater Pro. Everything was turned off and the LCD was at level 4 (level 1 being nothing). Seven and one-half hours!!! That's crazy.

I have the TX and I'm currently using a Rock Pegasus 330 which is a 13.3 inch machine similar in size and weight to the Sony SZ. The 13.3 inch size is a good balance, it doesn't feel too big nor does it feel too small - also the performance difference is vast, the TX is a fairly sluggish machine anyway but once you've been using a dual core machine with a reasonable hard drive, the TX seems even slower.

My personal choice is probably still the TX though, the smaller size isn't really much of a benefit for me but it is very light and the batterylife is just staggering - its role for me is to chuck in a bag or carry under my arm so these features are important to me. Furthermore, I have the trusty XPS 2 which services all my gaming needs adequately. From what you've said of your needs I would say the TX is a poor choice as its performance is a lot lower than the SZ, it's not really much good for any other than basic application usage such as net browsing, dvd watching etc.

Here are some comparison pics, the Peg 330 in the middle is a similar size to the SZ:

I travel a lot and have the SZ120 and it seems plenty portable to me, but then again I'm coming from a 15.4" notebook that weighed just short of 8lbs. But overall I think the amount of features you get with the SZ may just trump the extra size and weight. Having said that, it is a tough decision and I don't think you'll go wrong with either one.

I guess it depends how much you move around, and how much you are willing to carry. Personally, for me an S series was a better option - more power, ability to have the 7200rpm drive (which is a night and day difference when compared with the 4200!) and while it's bigger, it's not that much bigger. When I look at what I'm carrying around - laptop bag, power adapter, laptop, some books, small toolkit, bunch of recovery DVD's, external hdd - the weight difference of the TX to S series when looking at my total "portable" weight is very small.

Hi, I also didn't know which one to buy. I have a Vaio TR1MP for 2.5 years which is the same size like the TX. I was always very happy with its size and the good quality display. The only think I didn't like about it was the 1.8 inch hard disk which made the whole system totally slow. Now I want to give the TR1MP to my sister and decided to buy a new TX because I am a big fan of small laptops. However, after looking at the specification, I saw that after 2.5 years the TX still has the slow 1.8 inch harddisk and also the same Pentium M which is slightly faster and has a bigger L2 Cache.. Everything else is almost the same. Then I thought why investing in an old technology. Especially, when Vista comes out next year, I dont think that the TX will be fast enough for it.

So I decided to buy the SZ and ordered one last week. After working with it a couple of days, I thought that I am not a fan of small laptops any more. It is completely a different feeling with the bigger screen and also the performance of a Core Duo is amazing. Up to now, I used the smaller TR for emails and surfing the net and for other tasks my Desktop. But it is a good feeling that with the SZ I do not need the desktop any more and can do anything on it. And it is still portable. However, what I dont like about the SZ is that the fan is louder and it starts also when you are only surfing the net. I got used to the very quiet TR when reading articles etc. The TR was also loud when you need performance, but that was okay.

After thinking a lot about it, I would buy the SZ again. TX now looks to me more like a toy than a laptop you can do serious work with. But I have to admit the sz looks like a regular laptop and it does not attract that much attention like the smaller TX does.

I was benchmarking my TX against the Pegasus 330 last night (Core Duo 1.83Ghz), I ran a two hour DVD encode while also running superpi 32M - the Core Duo completed both tasks in 33 minutes, taking just 5 minutes more than running the encode on its own. The TX took around 50 minutes to do the encode and around two hours to do both...obviously this is not typical useage but it is likely you will want to use the laptop with an intensive task in the background, something the Core Duo can do with ease.

Given the choice again, it would be the TX again for me but mainly because I have my XPS if I need to do anything cpu intensive - I really like the tiny weight and massive batterylife of the TX, it suits its purpose for me well. I am seriously considering replacing the XPS 2 with the M1710 to get Core duo though...

I have an Acer 8204 and the TX-750. Of course anything with the Core Duo will spank the TX, but once you rebuild the TX and have the bare minimum on it, it's very snappy. Plus, it's so darned small you're tempted to take it just about anywhere and you can do so without the power adapter. Have a look at the Tucano Apple Work Out bag...very nice.

Yesterday I saw the TX at the local store and I am now happy that I decided to buy the SZ1XP. The TX2HP which I saw had the same problem with uneven screen illumination and the build quality is not as good as the SZ. The TX makes really a cheap plastic impression.

The TX battery is definitely one of its strong points - I bought a very minimal case which I was initially concerned with as it didn't have storage for the power adapter. The reality is of course the TX just doesn't need it as it can soldier on for most of the day without it...would like the mega 13,000Mah battery but can't find it for a reasonable price here.
