Thread Starter
I'm buying the following tomorrow..

Philips 200W6CS 20" Widescreen LCD Monitor. VGA and DVI inputs (plan to use DVD-Video with VGA output and the PC via DVI)
Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe Crossfire (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4400+ (Socket 939)
Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX (2x1GB) CAS2
Sapphire ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
Western Digital Caviar SE16 320GB 3200KS SATA-II 16MB Cache
ThermalRight SI-120 (Socket 754/939/47 Heatsink
Coolermaster Stacker 4in3 Device Module

I already have case, PSU, 80GB and 60GB HD's, DVD-ROM, 12cm fan (for CPU HS) DVD Re-Writer, keyboard and mouse.

Will this parts work together ok? I'll use a single X1900XT until I notice slowdown, then add master or change the card.

Enermax Liberty 620W.
Coolermaster Stacker 810 case.

Also getting a UPS Backup UPS 800VA. Not sure which CPU HSF will fit though, interested in the Thermelright SL-120 (apparently superior cooling performance to the Zalman flower and 9500)

I've got the xp-120. It's rock solid, i deffinatley would rexxomend it.

Only other thing i can see wrong is your processor. Personally, i would get an opteron and o/c it.
i too have only experienced the xp series, but if its anything like the xp series, then it'll be sick. btw is there any chance of oc'ing that 4400??
yeah i heard that some people can oc the x2 4400 + to like a x2 4800 +, its crazy man
post #7 of 18
Yes, the x2's are overclockable, but nowhere near as much as the opterons. The optys have a larger cache as well.

Pretty much the same setup I just purchased. No reason to spend $$$ on a dual core X2 right now. The 3700+ works just as fast as an FX chip when overclocked. I am waiting for the Western Digital 400GB drives to come down in price so I can get a ~800GB RAID 0 setup. Cheers

ok just purchased the lot, everything great except one lit pixel on the monitor, about 1" on the right away from the border. Don't think I can get a replacement, can only see it it my eyes focus on that part, and less than 2' away. Backlight is a bit uneven also. Fitting the ATI was a bit of a pig but got in eventually.

CPU runs 25 celsius at idle. Wow. I'm using stock AMD Heatpipe/fan. Flashed motherboard BIOS. Overclocking tomorrow. BIOS reports Enermax PSU fan around 900 rpm. Didn't buy the SL-120. Overall pretty quiet, my old system with 8cm fans was far louder. This new system has 4 x 12cm fans (case and 2 x CM Module 4 in 1) PSU 12cm fan, CPU fan, videocard fan.

hope your not lookin for a long system lifetime...sure itll last you a few years, but youll have to upgrade a lot in the future (ram/cpu/mobo). if you could wait for the am2 socket, at least you can gain a little more life out of things like ram, and maybe even the mobo.

lol why bother posting if you diddn't listen to anyones suggestions?

I would like to think that the socket 939 has a lot of life left in it. Am I correct in saying this? Why wait for something that will cost twice as much? And in the mean time I would have no computer! My old system is an XP 2100+ (socket A) lol.
no, it will. Believe me, you're not going to feel like you're stuck with old technolody with 939 or anything.

hell, the opteron i suggested is 939.

I didn't need advice to wait, only needed a "everything will work ok" I did my own research and seemed ok.

No point waiting for the next big thing as when AM2 is out you might wait until AM3 etc -and there was a special offer for ATI motherboard and videocards.

I've been doing light work (installing apps and games) CPU temp is 26, MB is 20.
nice that is low temp. is it on stock volt?

I'm baffled why the OP didn't get the opteron 165. Must not have done enough research to know that many of them can be clocked to FX-60 levels or above.
