I wish I knew what it was, but as far as I know they reduced the noise to a point where I have a really hard time hearing it. I haven't even applied the new bios update.

Wow Whugster your a Acer Technician... I bet if you open your laptop Falafel you'd see hot glue on all the parts which look like they might vibrate.. :P
But anyone actually know what a VGA choke is or is it made up

These things are capable of making static noises (not sure if it's vibration). But I read in some post somewhere that a technician just placed glue over it to dampen the sound that it's making.
Anyone interested in dropping some elmers on their x1600 to test this one?

My 8204 is in the mail on it's way back. Tech's replaced the screen (not sure with a QD version, which I specifically asked they do, or not) and updated the bios to cure my buzzing card (they couldn't replicate the buzz...yeah, right). We shall see...

Does this mean the sound is just merely annoying and not a sign of future failure? I could put up with the sound if they would come out and say that's all it was, but the idea of it failing is what gets me.

The other night I woke up in the night, got up, saw my laptop sitting on the desk. The screen appeared to be on which was not right because I had it set to turn the screen off after a few minutes of inactivity (always change the setting before night, better than closing the lid and causing heat buildup) and I'd clearly seen it turn off before I'd gone to bed. I go up to it, and the backlight is on but there is no picture. Moved the mouse, pressed keys, and the system was clearly locked up with the backlight on but nothing showing. When I restarted Windows XP gave me that "Your system has recovered from a serious error. Click here for more information" dialog box. It's only happened once so far, but that worries me because it seems at least slightly videocard related.

Might be but might be not, do not worry yourself until you it proves, cause you know the XP lives with its own pretty crazy life and lockups is one of its characteristics. So I strongly believe this not biggy, supported with what that Xtra Problem said: RECOVERED from serious error. I think it is more system related.

cheers

My 8204 got fine repaired by Acer support.

Hi guys,

Finally, my Acer French Repair Center experience ends well for me:

Acer France Support got my 8204 on the 13th of March for the static sound issue. I also gave them a description of the problem and how to reproduce the sound.

They send it back on the 29th with this description of the repair action, in french:
"changement de bobine sur carte mère"

In English, I would say that it means:
"coil (or maybe choke) replacement on motherboard" ("motherboard" term could include graphic card ???)

So, I own now a totally silenced 8204. No more static noise. Really, not a slightly noice when running 3D games or tokamak demos.

The dissamble / re-assemble process leaves absolutly no scratch or something like this on the case.

So they did a good job. Nothing to say.
