Gateway solo 9550 PROBLEMS

My moms laptop is having rpoblems. The AC adapter port seems to be loose. If she wiggles the cord, then it works but its a PITA. Ok so my mom took her computer to a local repair shop and ran into a couple problems. She took it to the repair shop and they said they needed to replace the port since it was barely connected to the motherboard. They said the repair would be just as strong as getting a new motherboard. She picked up the laptop today and it would not power up. The light would go on saying the battery was charging and the AC port was very tight, but the computer would nat even try to power up. The computer store now says that the module that powers up the computer is shorted out. They say it happened before she brought it in, but powering it up was never an issue before. Could you give me some possibilities on what went wrong at the repair shop? Do you think it was the Repair shops neglegence(sp?) It is a Gateway Solo 9550.

curious to know, how much was the repair bill for the first job? And how much do they want for the second job? The 9550 is pretty old, i have the 9300 (hooked up to stereo now). You could probably just buy a low end laptop for the amount you're spending on repairs, plus still get warranty and a much faster system. Or.. buy a used working 9550 on Ebay for cheap.
