Why did you buy your dell xps gen2/9300/xps 170? - Page 2

i got my 9300 because of all the features it came with for such a low price. for the same amount of money, theres no way id get a system equivalent to it at best buy or circuit city. the coupons really helped out. plus my first computer was a dell around 8 years ago and the service has always been really great.

I was getting frustrated with the lack of power in my 8600 (with a 9600 pro turbo) but I didn't want a P4 Clevo D900T machine for the heat, weight and poor batterylife. The XPS 2 offers the best balance of power and portability although I would still like to go back down to a 15.4 inch machine with a topend graphics card but that doesn't look like it's happening any time soon.

Above average performance, good price, excellent for gaming...

I got mine because of price, performance, weight (for a 17" DTR), and because of resale value. Laptops keep their resale value much better than desktops and I replace things about once per year. Additionally, I was running a laptop and desktop and it was a lot cheaper to go to one machine instead of two.

I needed a machine for going to Uni, and because my course is quite computer based, having a laptop would be useful. I spent months looking at all the available options and eventually decided I wanted a laptop with a Pentium M or AMD Turion. I was looking at Acers and the Fujitsu M3438G. As a gamer and a graphic design student it had to be powerful to run Photoshop and FPS games.

The kind of spec I wanted though was only about £300 less than getting a monstrous XPS Gen 2 with kick-ass video card and incredibly high resolution screen. My parents said I should get a Mac, but I managed to convince them that having a PC wouldn't be a problem. At the time, the Gen 2 was the best specced machine for the price, and unmatched by any other manufacturer in terms of spec. We rang Dell up to order it, and got £100 off!

Six months later and it's the best computer I've ever used. Before I joined Notebook Forums I was considering selling it and buying a Shuttle XPC because I thought I'd be stranded with out-of-date hardware, but after coming here I realise just what an awesome machine the Gen 2 is; powerful and upgradeable. The 7800GTX is in the post!

I travel a lot for work (airline pilot) and after a while, all this drinking Caprinias on the beach with flight attendants is getting really boring.
No really, they all know I'm married and I work for an goody two shoes airline.. damnit

Anyway, my 8600 just wasn't powerfull enough anymore so I had to get me a new toy. Since the only way is up, I could only get me an XPS2 (9300 is wasn't enough of a jump up for me).

lateron I upgraded to a 7800GTX and life's been good ever since....

Bought mine hoping it would work to do CAD work on the run if needed. Usually a gamer machine is the best .....But found even with the Screen being 17" it just dont cut it on any resolution setting. Plus all those stories of LCD being better on the eyes....Not true !! I find my 9300 UXUGA to screw them up worse even on the lowest brightness.

Can hook it to my desktop monitors to eliminate the noise from all the fans in the two towers I have, but havnt done so yet !!

Searching for a portable 19" LCD to fit in a laptop case, finding electric isnt usually the problem.

So ends up just being a toy for now to sit in the Lazyboy surfing the net.

May try the SAMSUNG 19" laptop next if they ever come down in price $4000 dollar is a bit spendy at the moment !! I hear talk Dell may come out with one ? I will be the first to trade this one in or up !!

Still think its one of nicest looking laptops and well worth the money, just not perfect for me at the monent to do any work off of....Just play !!

Not yet waiting on Duo (and Merom) or Merom directly. But soon then I'll be able to say "because I'll use it till it wears out"

It looks great, it runs even better, and it beats the crap out of my ex Inspiron 8200.
That's why!
I can't go without a notebook anymore.
So that's why I wanted this upgrade as the old one just didn't do it for me anymore when it comes to things like gaming.

I had an 8600 and it died while I was on a cruise. I had 3 years of "Complete Care" which touts "Next Business Day" service. After 4 visits from techs trying to fix it, and numerous 2-3 day waits before visits, I complained enough to the right person. I said "This is crazy, what if this next visit doesn't fix it? I paid good money for this warranty and I'm screwed."

The guy said he would ship out a replacement. He said it would probably be a refurb. I got the "replacement" and it was a NEW 9300. (The guy confirmed that I was the only owner of the replacement).

So I totally lucked out. I just overclocked it to 2.4, and installed a 7800GTX Go so now I can game on it as well. :-)

So I guess I got mine just by chance.

I was deciding between a second AW system and the Dell. A 30% off coupon was the deal-breaker, but I was leaning Dell before then. I actually ordered with a 10% coupon then found a 30% later so I reordered. I looked at Voodoo and Falcon Northwest as well, but they were very pricey. Sager was appealing, but Dell had a slight edge on price and their design was time-tested and proven. (XPSgen2 -> M170)

Dell plusses: price (even before coupon), battery life, lighter, proven design, strong user base (here).

AW plusses: AMD cpu, dual HD option, dual CD option, I like the "alien" design

Use: games, surfing the net, rare video editing.

All in all, I am pretty happy with the Dell and much happier than with my previous AW. The AW is a good machine, but they made too many design changes and ended up botching some things. The screen and wireless were horrible and the advertised upgradeable video card turned out not to be.

I got my 9300 because I wanted something that had a decent GPU, and could be used as a desktop replacement. It fits those requirments fully.

Because my, ahem, 500Mhz Thinkpad was a little slow! Plus, I wanted the best.

As it turned out, I couldn't afford the best by quite a long shot, but I managed to get a good deal on an XPS Gen 2. I'm really happy with my Gen 2 though, it does everything I want it to do, with the possible exception of the wifi being a bit sh!te. My wife still thinks its a waste of money, but I can't win 'em all eh?

BTW, reflux, if you don't mind me asking, how much did the 7800GTX cost you?
