Is 2GB needed?

I'm planning on buying a Sager 5720 (from PC Torque), i'll be using it for design purposes, which requires Firefox, Skype, Photoshop CS2, Dreamweaver, Flash and an FTP program all to be open at once. My current PC can just about handle all that with 1GB ram so do you think I should get 2GB for the laptop?

My foremost concern is that 2GB may suck up a lot more power?

PS: In the battery option if I select "Spare Lithium-ion battery" instead of "Lithium-ion battery" will that mean I get 2 batterys?

Edit: Sorry, wrong forum, please can a mod move it to the right one?

2gb ram will not suck more juice (at leat you cannot see a difference) so your choice should be clear.

its best to get 2gb ram for adobe ps. a well configured 5720 is going to average ~$2,500; might as well get the full 2gb ram. about the spare li-ion battery; yes, you will receive two 8-cell primary batteries with your ordered 5720.

If you do not have enough ram that will cause your hard drive to be accessed more and reduce battery life.

1 GB of ram, 100 bucks
Being able to alt tabs out of games without your computer giving you shit, priceless

2 Gigs is the only way to fly. One gig just isn't "there" anymore with all the latest and greatest stuff coming out. Max that baby out and you will not regret it!

Amen to that!

I use photopshop cs and it can get pretty intensive. I upped mine to the max of 2.75 gig from 1 gig, because i was hitting to much page file which was making me run slugish or would sometimes even reboot my NOT saved worked. So yes, do 2 gigs

2 GB should be the norm nowadays. Your machine will perform better and at least your hard drive(s) will last longer due to less wearing.
In fact many of us would load up on alot more than 2 Gigs if our laptops allowed it. Get the 2 Gigs, it is money well spent.

I second that

2GB is an absolute essential, the more complex the game code, the more memory needed. I don't care how efficient the code is programmed or executed, bottom line is that the more data that can be dumped from the HDD to memory, the less the interaction between the HDD and the CPU/GPU.

Remember, HDD access times are measured in "Milliseconds" or a thousandth of a second. RAM access times are measured in "Nanoseconds" or a Billionth of a second. It's quite obvious the more data in memory, the quicker things will be, not to mention that the more complex the code, this becomes a necessity.

In other words, certain games will not even run properly if you don't have enough memory because the more complex the code, the more of it at one time that needs to be in mainboard RAM for CPU processing. This is so the CPU can properly execute the code (In an efficient and timely manner) and therefore the app, or game in this case, in the manner required as dictated by the game's code. Different code puts different requirements on your hardware, this is why we have minimum and optimal system requirements notification on software.

Battlefield 2 sucks without 2 GB of RAM and just wait until you see the future games, the demands are going to get crazy with DUAL CORE...

In the near future, 4GB is not going to sound crazy at all, mark my words...

SebC: I'm curious, do you plan on also using your laptop for 3D games? If you're not a gamer, why not get something with a less expensive graphics card and beef up the CPU and RAM with the money you save.

I'm not saying the 5720 is bad but the 7800GTX is an expensive gaming card and is not needed for the applications you described you are using.

Unless you are a closet gamer and don't want anyone to know!

is that why alt-tabbing takes like 5min for me?? damn... time for some more RAM

2 Gig is the sweet spot for Windows XP right now. Any less and you'll suffer application memory swapping more than needed. Any more, and Windows spends too much time managing the extra memory.

yeah that G.Skill is looking nice to me.

i think i'm going to get a laptop with 512, then add another gig myself. I can then swap out the 512 for another gig stick if things get too tight... but i doubt it. my desktop runs my things ok with 1, but 1.5 sure would be nice.

does it matter that much if its 667mhz or 533mhz ram?

Solis,

Most modern laptops have dual channel ram. If you put one, or two unalike memory sticks in one of these laptops you are killing your ram performance by forcing the machine to turn off dual channel ram access. Get at least 1 gig (2 512s) but 2 gig (2 1gigs) would be better.
