power-on password

Last week I bought a Pavilion DV5030us. One of the security features listed is the power-on password. Sounds like a good idea, right? Prohibit anyone else from accessing your bios....wrong!

Now you are probably thinking - this idiot forgot his password. Wrong again. I correctly set it up and used it for six days. Yesterday morning I turned on the laptop, entered my power-on password and started working. Everything was great. A little later, I left the notebook running but closed the cover and went to get coffee. When I came back, I opened it and without thinking hit the power button - sending it into hibernation. O.K., I hit the power button again and it asked for the power-on password. No problem, I began typing my 7 digit password. It appeared to double space every entry and started beeping after I had typed just 4 digits.

I am screwed. I called HP and the agent says "why did you put a password on it? HP recommends that you do not". He had me take out the battery and hold the power button to discharge it, replace the battery and restart. Still unable to enter my password. Next HP tells me to box it up and send it in so they can reset the bios....for $300.

I did not forget my password. There is a problem with the laptop, the keyboard, hibernation...something - but not user error. But no telling that to HP.

So the end result is, I am paying three hundred dollars for correctly using a security feature advertised by HP.

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. I had to tell somebody and HP is not listening.

This sounds like a keyboard problem. You may want to try an external keyboard to see it solves the problem.

yeah, I hate those BIOS passwords.. but that does sound more like a hardware malfunction to me.. as was said above.. try plugging in a different keyboard.

I thought removing the battery and clearing the system of any electrical left overs erased the bios passwords? So why are you entering any password afterwards? I would do a CMOS clear so that everything is back to default. I'm not familiar with doing this on laptops so maybe someone else can help.

The CMOS battery is on the motherboard. If you just remove the laptop battery, it will take months, if not years, before the CMOS is completely discharged.

heh, pass is stored in eeprom-you cant erase with battery removing..

you can choose few ways:
1) send lappy to HP for 300bucks
2) open it and look for eeprom 24Cxx type, read it and send me that data, i modify them and send you back with pass disabled.. (for free)
3) press F2 to enter bios (now ask pass) and press F12, now you must see hash id(from this i can calc masterpassword), but calculation cost something..
4) leave it as is..

I still think this is a keyboard issue and plugging in an external keyboard to type the password should solve the problem.

I guess we have to wait until he gets his laptop fixed before posting here again.

It's been a while... Would be nice if he posted back the "fix".

Well, I don't know about the original poster's replying, but upon checking the manual http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00626329.pdf
It seems you should be able to clear it via removing the RTC (CMOS) battery.

Sound like Bradsytem in the Czech Republic is either mistaken. http://www.notebookforums.com/showpo...36&postcount=6

I was thinking it would be like a PC, Wonder why HP was saying send it back to them? Charging the customer $300?

Clearing a "power on" password is covered under warranty. And there is a disk I believe for some models that allow for it without removing the battery etc...
