Just ordered my 1st Refurb -- a 700m

I'm not a big Refurb guy. In fact, I've never purchased a Refurbished anything before. But, that just changed...

I've been looking for a laptop that I can take "on the go", like when I go out for lunch, or on weekend trips, or just driving around town, etc. I already have a fully loaded Dell 6000, so I don't need a maxed out system for my 2nd laptop (for those that are wondering, I find the 6000 to be a tad big/heavy to grab & go).

Anyway... thanks to a 20% off Dell Outlet coupon, I was able to snag a refurbished 700m for $783.20 plus tax. It's only a 1.8 Ghz w/ 512 MB of RAM and a 60 MB HD, but it should be plenty good for what I need (email, surfing the net, etc). And at that price, I won't have to be as nervous about tossing it in the car or getting french fry grease on the keyboard. Well, you know what I mean.

Next I'd like to get one of those Broadband cards, and be totally mobile. The 8-cell battery this unit comes with should help there.

By the way, I thought about getting the 710m, but for some reason I just don't like the new grey-colored keyboard. Go figure.

oh...so if you buy one of those cards, you don't have to pay for access if you have unlimited pcs vision (in my case, with sprint) ?

I got my 700m new for about the same price Regarding broadband cards, the service still is too high. I normally can find a free hotpot in my area. I also have an account with Freedomlink. If you have AT&T/SBC DSL, the cost is $1.99 per month. There are thousands of Freedomlink hotspots in U$.

There is a fee, normally at least $40 per month.

EVDO through Verizon is 60 bucks if you have your cell service with them as well. They started a new program called "Merits" if your total service is over 80 a month with them. It gives you a 25% discount on overpriced accessories but the main advantage is new equipment every 12 months instead of every two years, that *is* a big deal.

You can buy whatever phone or air card you want at Verizon's lowest advertized promotional price. I just got a Treo 650 for the same price a new customer gets instead of a crappy hundred off on the "new every two" program they have.

That Treo is a hoot.

I would love to have Verizon's EVDO data plan. BUT, my cell service is with Cingular, not Verizon. Which means the Verizon price for me would be $79.95 per month (plus the price of a Card). That's a bit steep for every-now-and-then use. Cingular's EDGE plan is much slower but I can get it for $49 per month ($59 minus a 19% discount).

So... even though it will be slower, spending an extra $49 every month will be easier to swallow than spending an extra $79 every month.

Glad to see you finally chose your laptop!

My personal experience with the outlet has been very good, I bought a 9300 and XPS2 both of which I couldn't tell the difference from brand new. Everything was sealed, the laptops had all their protective covers etc. all in all, a good saving.

Thanks! Haven't received mine yet, but I'm sure it will be pretty close to "good as new." And since it will be a 2nd laptop used only occasionally, it will certainly be good enough.

For around $800, it's hard to beat!
