Is the nec6500A 8x speed just a big scam?

I have long been wondering why my 8x NECdrive takes 23 minutes to burn a normal DVD. I tried testing it with nero drivetest and received an astonishing 2.5 average write-speed using a 16x dvdr+ (and that is with the new and updated dell firmware, mind you).

I know that this has been an issue for other people than me, so my question is: Is this drive a joke? Do we have reason to complain? Or is there a natural explanation?

I have run some tests. For myself, its speed is based on the type of media you are writing to. If you have done the firmware upgrade for D/L and to use +/- discs. The speed is fine when I use DVD-R discs (verbatim) but when I use DVD+R the speed is slower.

At least it burns a disc....

I just stuck a NEC 6750A in my XPS but haven't tested it above 4x yet since I am using 8x generic ProDisc/DVDPro/Princo DVD-R media. Nero takes about 14 to 18 minutes to burn a full disc including the lead-in / lead-out tracks.
