New macs Merom-upgradeable?

Thread Starter
Do you guys think that the new intel imac and MBP will be able to upgrade to Merom once it is released? I've heard that Merom and Yonah use the same chipset and so changing them shouldn't be all that difficult.

Depends on the pin configuration.

nope, the macbook pros are like the old PBs and iBooks, w/ the CPU soldered to the motherboard. the iMac on the other hand is socketed, but i'm not sure offhand if the pin count and configuration will be compatible. intel usually does little to provide an upgrade path even within CPU families (pentium 4 cores for example). i'd guess that they won't be upgradeable as intel has to add 64-bit capability for merom yet. then again given the quick turnover from yonah to merom/conroe it might be more financially feasible for them to stay w/ the same chipset as u mentioned. guess we'll have to wait and see.

The core solo/duo is pin compatible, but two obstacles are present.

1. The iMac case is a bitch to open
2. The efi firmware may need an update to recognize the new processor correctly

it's not an issue of core duo vs. solo, it's about whether solo/duo yonahs will be pin compatible with solo/duo meroms.

I've heard they're going to be pin compatible, but that the chipset required for Merom is going to be different.

the chipset are the same for the first batch of merom, they're going to use a new chipset for merom next year (mid 2007 that's what I heard). The pin configuration are the same as well. The question is will merom work, who knows. Even if both cpu are the same its up to intel if they are compatible. There are rumors that yonah has 64 bit capability(well sort of I dont know the details). It was disabled somewhere, dunno why they did that though(battery life perhaps??). I dont know if that article is true or not.
