Question for MMORPG Players with Wireless

Please help me find a way to stop this from happening. I have a new 5680 with the 802.11g internal wireless card. No problems surfing at all, but everytime I connect to Everquest or Star Wars Galaxies I get disconnected after 30 mins. Is there a setting I am missing or will this always be the case?

Please help as this is very frustrating.

Thanks,

Gynoid.

I have Wireless B in an old 233 P2 Laptop I play Ultima Online on, I've never had a problem. (even though some times it can slow to a crawl!)
I've never been disconnected, what OS are you using?

What kind of errors are you getting? I play mmorpgs on my wireless network all the time without a hickup. I do remember another person here said they got disconnected every hour or so but turned somthing off and it went away. Ill see what i can find.

ARRRGGGHHHH!

This is so infuriating. My 13xxx box was never checked, so that's not it. I don't lose my connection to the net, just get booted from the server I am on. Is windows surfing for updated connections and constantly switching or something?

If I don't solve this soon I am going to snap

Gynoid, What is your wireless setup? Are you using an access point? A router/built-in access point? More information could help. If you are using a Linksys router, for instance, older firmware versions have known disco problems with Everquest. A firmware upgrade may be your ticket. Also, you want to make sure that windows isn't trying to power down your wireless card. Using port triggering on older Linksys routers may also help.

Hmm I am very knew to the wireless thing. My linksys router is about 7 months old so I will go investigate new firmware. It is a b router and my card is a g.

Not sure on the other stuff you asked, a quick walkthrough would be awesome although I know all of you are very busy.

Thanks all of you for trying to help me with this, it is very frustrating.

I have a linksys WRT54G router and WMP54G card. They are sitting about 5 feet away from each other. I get about 40%+ packet loss between my router and the card. While this % is fine for surfing the web, playing a game with this type of PL is very frustrating to say the least. I have no 2.4 devices.
Most of the people I talk to that notice this type of PL in there games get dropped/lagged/chopped/Two steps forward one step back. Here is a screen shot of my TCP/IP path with two graphs bottom is total route top is just between my computer and router.

Bottom line wireless is new and not even close to cable. In data Integrity and response time. To tweak your hardware and test your route I recommend
this site. The manuals/FAQs/Tutorials/Fourms are the best around for honest information about products there promises and lies.

Hope this helps your problems.

To add a little bit with out writing a book. Surfing the web is not a constant packet flow between server and client. The Web is a short burst of packets. Games need a constant dialog so packets are being sent between client and server as fast and constant flow as possible. If there is packet loss, low rate or dropped packets. What happens is lag/disco/stuttering. Could be any thing ie wireless/cable/server/software hunting it down is the fun part . Wireless a,b,g are just alpha instead of numeric representation of bandwidth and Hz. This is just a small bit of info.

The net is vast and infinite

I'd take a look at your power settings. If it is consistently happening at around 30 minutes it sounds like your laptop is switching into some kind of power saving mode. Try turning off all power saving options in the control panels and then connect to the game to see if it happens.

FYI- I played Final Fantasy online on my 5680 for two hours last night with a low signal strength that gave me around 1 MBS without any problems.

The first thing I would do for both of you guys is to try connecting with ethernet to see if it is the wireless or not. That would at least remove one variable. Don't give up. This stuff is super frustrating, but there usually is an answer..
