Not a dell owner but this looks like good news for dell lovers. Hope you all find don't mind me posting it in the dell thread.
|DELL IS IN NEGOTIATIONS WITH AMD to use its silicon, according to Indian IT news site Newkerala. Dell told a news conference in Bangalore that his company did not have an exclusive relationship with Intel and pointed out that Dell had already used AMD parts in 1986. "We are open to using parts of other manufacturers," Dell is reported as saying.
Speaking at a press conference to announce further investment in India, Dell claimed that his company had increased market share in 157 of its 165 territories, with business outside the US growing from $12 billion to $22 billion in the last three years. The company's planned new assembly plant in India, together with its existing four call centres and two R&D units, will double its workforce in the sub-continent to 20,000 by 2009.
Dell has played the 'we can go elsewhere, you know' card with Intel approximately 2,765 times in the last ten years. It's not known if the company actually means it this time round. The volume discounts the PC maker receives from Intel are significant and moving to AMD silicon just before Chipzilla's rumoured upcoming price reductions undercut AMD would be plain daft. µ
