Acer 5672 won't hibernate

Thread Starter
I read somewhere else of people having this problem...

Sometimes when I close the lid which I have set to hibernate the computer, it won't hibernate! I'll come back later to the computer, and it will still be on with a message saying something to the effect of not having enough resources to hibernate (?!?).

Anyone else see this or have a fix for it?

If it helps, I have reformatted the system to NTFS and XP Pro. The only Acer e-programs I loaded was power management and GridVista.

There's a fix for this... It's related to having more than 1GB of RAM (I'm assuming you have the 2GB version of the 5672)...

Do a search for the fix...

Yes, what wyn said.

But I never see why people find hibernate useful? I use sleep mode. Sleep is much much faster to shutdown and starup than hibernate. And if I want the computer sleeping for more than 2 days without being plugged in to stay charged, I just go ahead and shut it down all the way (which is like never).

what do you mean by hibernate? I can only choose between 'stand-by' and 'sleep'... where is the hibernate??

You have to go into the power settings and enable hibernate before you can use it. Hibernate takes a snapshot of all running programs and writes it to the hard drive - that's why it takes up 2GB on your disk - it is proportionate to the amount of RAM you have. This way, unlike sleep or suspend, there is no battery discharge during hibernate, but it takes a little more time to start back up than sleep.

yes I know that, but it's called 'sleep mode' on mine... it writes to the hard drive and takes up 1023 mb on mine... I can't find 'hibernate' anywhere

You sure about that? It is a function of Windows and when you initiate it, it will either say "Preparing to Standby" in the even that you are going into Standby (sleep), or "Preparing to Hibernate".

Either way - it works fine over here simply by enabling Hibernate support in the "Hibernate" Tab in Power Management (Windows Power Management).

yes, I'm quite sure. Standby is different from Sleep here. I have to enable sleep-support just like you describe hibernate support, and it then says 'preparing to ...'
I don't have a Hibernate tab, but I do have a Sleep tab. I do have to say that I 'm using a dutch version of XP PRO. So it's actually called 'Slaap stand' instead of 'Sleep mode'.

Well SLAAP me silly - my bad!

Unable to locate BIOS download

Maybe it's me, but I have not been able to locate the most recent BIOS update on the acer site for 5672. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You need to google for KB909095... it's a known Microsoft fault with laptops that have more than 1Gb of RAM.

I found a website where a guy is having the same issue with his Toshiba Tecra M4, he's posted a link to the file Microsoft sent him. It's one of those annoying "Yes, we know it's a bug. Yes, we have a fix. No, you can't just download it because unless the whole world complains about it we can't be bothered to test it properly." ...

Patching your OS from random websites is a little dodgy, but if you're feeling brave, here's a link that'll help: http://www.u-g-h.com/InsufficientSys...PISOLIVED.aspx
