RAM Upgrade

Thread Starter
Okay, someone gave me the idea to upgrade the Sentia's memory.

So what I'm thinking is to order my Sentia m3200 with only 256MB of memory, then buy some 2x1GB memory sticks or 2 single 1GB memory sticks from newegg.

First question. Will the Sentia's motherboard even support 2GB? If so, is it easily upgradeable?

So, I know it's DDR2 533mhz. But is it 4200 or 4300? Click here and drill down to link me to the Sentia-restricted list.

And here are two 4200's, the only 2x1GB kits available. Which one should I get?

This is off-topic from RAM, but is it possible to overclock the Sentia from 2.0 to 2.26?

Thanks.

Ive heard from MANY people that 2 gb of ram on the sentia makes it actully slower, i would just go with 1 gig. But thats a good idea to buy ram later.

that doesnt really make sense, and yes you can overclock it. there are tutorials on it, but i think it would be better off in a 3400 as it has more adequate cooling. this also will probably void your warranty. 2ghz is really plenty, but i like those 2.13ghz and 2.26ghz p-m's.
as for performing the ram upgrades u find the correct panel, remove it, flip out the dimms, remove old ram, instert new ram, fold down dimms, close bam done.

I need others to confirm that 2 gigs of RAM will slow the Sentia. I don't think I'll overclock, and the reason I'm going with the 3200 is its size.

There was an old thread but it must have got deleted but 3 guys were saying the 2gb of ram slowed down their sentia and they noticed this because they took a strip out and noticed a big difference. I mean you can go with the 2 gigs im just saying thats what the guys were saying.

I don't think they'd support the idea of me cheating them of money, first of all, by getting 256MB of RAM to get 2GB elsewhere.

The 2gig being slower than when we removed the extra gig stick was with the old sentia's - before they brought in the new models. I haven't heard of any such 'problems' with the newer models yet.

Here be the thread: http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=120900

But to my knowledge, it's only a problem with the 223s. Which really aren't like the newer ones, an' should therefore not bee compared to them.

dont you need DDR2 Sodimms? or does that come in different category's 2? anyway the mobo will support it anyway go for it :-)

Note on the "2GB Slowdown":
Just to back up what BugEater said, the notebooks that experienced this were the Uniwill-based 223II0 model Sentias. Our notebooks are 223IE based, with a newer Intel chipset...they just come with the same 223II0 casing. Although the 2GB slowdown could exist with our m3200s, I would doubt this is the case.

Requisite RAM:
The RAM you're looking for is DDR2-533MHz PC4200 . However, it is noteworthy to mention that Crucial.com states DDR2-667MHz PC5300 will work as well (albeit with a CAS latency of 5 rather than the 4 on the PC4200). From the two chips you had selected on Newegg, I believe either should work. Crucial RAM is in everything I own, including the 2x512MB Crucial matched set in my own m3200. I'm unfamiliar with mushkin.

Non-OEM RAM and Tech Support
This only voids your warranty if you do something that breaks the notebook during the install. I'll liken this to auto warranties: If you replace your exhaust system on a new car...the dealer cannot void the warranty for the entire vehicle, but rather only for the replaced part and any associated labor. However, if you send the notebook back to AW for repairs, they will likely require you to reinstall your old RAM.

Overclocking:
The m3200s come overclocked just a bit from the factory. There is a "High Performance Mode" option in the BIOS. It is enabled by default and slightly overclocks your processor. My 1.86GHz 750 runs at ~1.9+GHz. The Intel Processor Detection utility accurately displays this increase but I forgot what the actual number was. I seriously doubt it would step the 760 up 0.26GHz, however.

I bought 2gbs of Kingston RAM to put in my new (one month old) m3200, and I was extremely dissappointed. I could hardly tell a difference from the 256mb that I ordered my Sentia with.

I ended up returning the 2gbs and just buying 2 x 512mb Samsung sticks from the classifieds on this forum, and the computer seems much faster!

I don't have any numbers to back it up, but I promise you that my new Sentia felt slower with 2gbs.

Well G.9 i guess its up to you to be the tester of 2gb on the new sentia

Which is in no way a comforting thought.

He's being uninformed an' ignorant.
First of all, it's a different motherboard, with a much newer BIOS, an' if it doesn't work, I should be very surprized indeed. Second, get DDR2 RAM, which not a one of us who posted in the other thread had. An' finally, if it doesn't work, send it back an' get your money again. So yeah, I wouldn't worry at all.

the older sentias had latency problems. these since have gone away. 2gigs will most definitely be faster.

So, let's see... if I'm to test this on the m3200, I'll be the first to do so?

im sure there are others they are being melodramatic

UNless your doing amzing [H]ard Gaming (which is never gunna be the case on a laptop much less a sentia) or some other equally intensive application (pixar type animation...etc) 2gbs will be a waste of money.

On another note it WILL be slower on any cpu, maybe not noticeably slower but slower none the less. Explaining it is rather complicated unless you wanna learn about interleaveing, working set's, buddy system, pff, lru, belady's anomoly, and other ram related harware/software principle's.

Did you not see my post? My Sentia is the "new " one, and I used 2gbs of DDR2 PC4200 RAM.

...so no, you won't be the first.
