Asus Z71V random shut downs

I built one for my daughter last summer. Pretty much standard hardware. It's running XP Pro and the standard software (Adobe, M$, university network client, Yahoo IM, ePrompter, etc) but no firewall or AF (not allowed on univ network). Recently it has taken to just shutting down at what appears random times, always when she isn't using it. I have all the power and standby settings turned off. I don't think heat is the problem, but can't be sure. Just before shutdown she tells me the fan speeds up and then it just shuts off. Any ideas what I might look for?

Your best bet would be to google it because there could be a number of reasons why it is doing this. Usually its due to a virus infection, hardware malfucntion etc... I dont think its z71v specific so cant really suggest anything specific. Although if your having random startup issues then I can help you there...

Google it is. Just thought I would check and see if had happened to anyone in the forum.

Out of curiosity, if it's happening when she isn't using it, maybe she's setting it down on a blanket or something similar and blocking the fan intake. That might explain it.

That's what I thought. But she is using it on her dorm desk. A cold dorm I might add.

My girlfriend has a z71a and it's doing the same thing...

Thermal issue? Log your temperatures. And check your system log.

When I had the Z71V, I also had problems with restarting. I sent it back to the reseller and they couldn't reproduce the problem.

However I'm not sure if this is the answer, but my problem randomly just stopped occuring.

It always restarted while I was at three difference locations: Buddies house, GF's house, My house.

Now... I thought about why in the hell it was restarting there. I thought about how it wasn't getting enough air... wasn't the case. Then I thought about the notebook possibly not getting enough power. However if it wasn't getting enough power, it would just switch to battery. But those were my two thoughts, and I'm not sure exactly what was causing the restarts.

The difference between your problem and my old problem was that my puter always restarted while in gaming. Strange...

I was wondering, could this phenomenon be caused by MS updates? I know the school network admins required everyone to apply security updates last Fall. Could those updates have changed some settings somewhere?

hey,
I'm having the problem with rebooting as well. So, i called the tech support and they told me it could be - RAM, CPU, hard disk or motherboard problem.
So, the easiest way to rule out was RAM - i had 1024 mb (2x512 mb), simply i removed one 512 mb module and ran Prime95 test for 5 days in a row, so far - no rebooting and no errors shown in the test. I'm going to send the old module back to the reseller and get a new one and see how it would work.

When I was haveing the restarting problems as well... I ran memtest over night with 0 errors. It was strange... the problem just fixed it self I guess you could say... for the last 3-4 months of ownership I didn't have a single restart under the same conditions.

Starting up in safe mode might help determine if it's hardware or software related. Dimon aggie might be on the right track. Remove and reinstall the RAM and test it.
