New to forums, Geforce Go 6800 question

Hi all.

As you can see this is my 1st post here.

I found this site by accident while surfing ebay for a Geforce Go 6800 card to replace the ATI X700 in my 8510 GZ.

The reason I want/need to do this is not because I game, but because I also video edit & Roxio's easy Media Creator 8 has "issues" with the ATI cards, 2 of which I've come up against while making DVD's out of my 8MM DV's.

I have done a search & I have not found an updated answer to the question.

Has anyone done this swap & I have a few other questions that didn't seem to have a final resolve in the threads I read:

How is the motherboard affected with the video card obviously being slotted?

Since I've learned that the M680 is the high end non retail version of the 8510, can or does the BIOS need to be flashed on the 8510 so it'll accept, if it can be done, the Nvidia card?

Lastly, where would I find one of these cards that fits & plugs in?

I've already gone up to the full 2GB of RAM & am now looking at buying a 2.26 GHZ processor in the PC as well.

The video card would "complete" the upgrades as it seems only 120 GB is available for a HDD & the new WiFi is not due out for quite some time.

Thanks.

Rather than replace the card...I'd replace the program. Roxio's software has never been at the top of the list for reliability/stability.

As for the video card info...it's all here and on notebookreview.com. No BIOS necessary. Not sure what you mean by "how the motherboard is affected"...there is no affect. The site that you can get them from(if the guy even has any more...a week or so ago someone posted he was out) is on notebookreview.com as well somewhere.

Why dont u use nero 6 instead? I highly doubt u will find another nvidia go 6800... besides if you dont game I wouldnt waste the extra money. Additionally, the new nx860 models start at 1199.00. IF anything u can sell your 8510gz and upgrade to the newer models with the newer nvidia cards or wait till best buy comes out with a newer version of our laptop.

In regards the nvidia go upgrade, you dont need any bios update. All u do is swap your ati card out with the new card. Then you reposition the thermal pads on the heatsink to match the nvidia cards and then place the thermal pad from the ATI GPU to the nvidia GPU.

The only downside to this upgrade is that the laptop runs abit warmer... and the battery life is abit less but you go from 1600 3dmark05 scores to over 4500 : )

Easy Media Creator does exactly what I need, it makes full frame DVD's ou of my DV tapes.

Far as the MB part of my question, I'm only going by what I read that Otto wrote.

I do game as this is my desktop replacement.

Yes the new PC's are out, but the low end version has just what the 8510 does, aside from the vidoe card, so it'd be just as good for me to upgrade my known existing working, no problem PC.

That & the $$ loss I'd take trying to sell it would buy an upgraded processor or video card anyway!

I don't use the PC on battery much, only when I travel, so I'm not worried about a shorter life, but I did buy a 12 cell battery since it's got 6600 Mah vs the 4800 Mah of the 8 cell battery.

good luck finding one... they range from 150 -250 if u can find one. Make sure its the Gateway version of the Nvidia go 6800, the dell version wont work FYI. Btw the new gateways are Duo core so maybe u should consider it... i m sure u can still sell the 8510gz for 800+ on ebay
