CPU throttle stopped working.

I have an Inspiron 9200 with a 1.6gHz Dothan CPU. It was adjusting the speed just fine until yesterday, when I downloaded a CPUID utility from Intel and installed it. This morning, when I booted up, the CPU speed stays at 1594 instead of dropping down to 599 as is usual. The CPU temperature stays high as well.

I've deinstalled the CPUID utility, rebooted, ran TaskMgr (and ProcessExplorer) to see if there was any process hanging. Nope, I've plenty of idle time (90+%). My antivirus is up to date and reported no viruses lurking this morning when I scanned. Ditto for Spybot S&D and Adaware.

I really don't want to reload right now, although I have everything backed up. The only thing I can think of is to reload the Intel Chipset drivers. Is that where the CPU speed setter is? Anybody else have a good idea what is going on? I'm at my wit's end (a short ride, true). Thanks.

Fixed it!

Well, I didn't discover what caused the problem in the first place, but I downloaded Speedswitch XP http://www.diefer.de/speedswitchxp/index.html and set it for dynamic switching. The CPU speed goes up and down according to load like it should now, and my CPU temperature is a whole lot better.

Note: Speedswitch only works for those chips that have the dynamic speed capability, I think, like the Mobility chips.
