LG vs. Samsung....frustrating

Are people really getting LG Phillips screens that look GREAT with their E1705/9400. Are these WUXGA+ with true life, crystal type screens. I'm only asking this because Dell has been an absolute PIA with this. I have been told that part #DF028 was nullified. I have been told that this part does NOT go with my computer. One of the techs today asked me to give him the service tag numbers of the computers that have the DF028 or LG Phillips since they can't possibly have this panel. Like I carry service tag numbers around with me. I did tell this person that he was questioning my honesty and it was very insulting. I called the parts dept. and, interestingly enough, the DF028 is available but does not specify truelife. In addition, the Samsung is about $100 cheaper than the LG and maybe this is why Dell is not necessarily using these. Who knows? I also keep being given the story of like for like. Aren't the LG and Samsung the same product. Can people reconfirm that they have been receiving the LG? I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Also, is there another part number for the LG? I just want to have all information regarding this before I talk to a supervisor/manager. Was told that one would call me within 24hrs. Will see if that happens since I was also told that one would call this past Mon. and no one ever called.

Thanks again.

I got a Samsung screen and adjusted it. Love it. Frankly I will say what I said in the 9300/XPS2 days. A lot of people here are oversensitive when it comes to the screens.

Also, it is the luck of the draw and there is no way for Dell to pick a particular panel. I wish you luck but chances are you will have take what they have and hope you get one with less light leakage. Seriously though I guess I have been lucky. My LG with the 9300 (everyone wanted a Samsung then BTW ) was great, and the two Samsung screens I have are great on my XPS2 and my E1705.

There is no rhyme or reason to what panel you will get. I would say if you get one without a lot of light leakage to keep it and just adjust the colors from there.

Operaman,

Thanks for your suggestions, but It's not the colors. I've adjusted those to my liking. I've also adjusted the brightness. It's the light leakage, which although not as much as the replacement which I did not keep, it is still evident and especially obvious when watching DVDs and doing video editing.

Forum members,
To ask the question again, can those who received the LG, part #DF028, confirm the screen looks good and that this is truelife. How is the angle viewing and how are the colors? I am working on getting a replacement but I need to get confirmation on the part # and that it does match with the Samsung. Dell does have the part listed but no mention of truelife and does not come up as a part match for the E1705/9400.

Thanks in advance.

I had an LG screen go bad on mine (thin vertical lines showing up in cyan colors once the unit got up to temperature)... and it's a damned shame. The LG screen ROCKED. I got a Samsung as a replacement and ridiculous light leakage aside, the colors aren't nearly as vibrant as the LG (after gamma correction, etc.).

I'm waiting for a full system replacement that specifies the LG screen, but we'll see what shows up, I'm not holding my breath and know there may be more Dell-struggles in my future.

I've received my 1705 today. I just checked and I got an LG screen. I'm very happy with my screen. Basically no light leakage whatsoever. Its a WUXA+ screen with truelife.
I've ordered the laptop last thursday , March 16.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info guys. I am supposed to get an LG replacement this time around. I checked the part number and it is DF028 but we will see. Keeping fingers crossed. Best to escalate to a manager or supervisor if you are having problems. Too bad there is so much disinformation regarding the panels.

It is a shame because the LG screens are fantastic. I ended up getting one for my I6000 when I sent in for a replacement and I was ecstatic! The screen is awesome even without any color correction(haven't done it yet). It's brighter than my old Samsung, has better viewing angles and has almost no light leakage at all. I don't understand why Dell uses the Samsungs at all when the LG's are clearly superior.

What doesn't make sense is why are some people getting the LG and some are not. Luck of the draw? When the E1705 is iinput by tech people to see what the matching parts are the LG does not come up. However, it is a match. I do think that money may be an issue because the Samsung is a bit more than $100 cheaper.

The part number from my DELL QUOTATION / ORDER for my display is 320-4651? What is this? If there are problems, I want to make sure I get the LG!!

Samsung

Some of you people with Samsungs(SEC5557) must have received a bad lot. I have a Samsung on my E1705 and after color adjustment it is one of the best screens I have seen. This is my first laptop, but I have looked at a lot of different laptops in stores and this Samsung is just as good or better than any of them. I have played with my Brothers new Sony, and mine is just as good.
On mine the colors are fantastic after adjustment. The screen is very bright and the viewing angle is almost 180 deg. I can still read the text when I can only see a sliver of the screen. There is a small amount of light leakage, but not noticeable unless you have a black screen in a dark room and the brightness is on the highest setting. Maybe I just got lucky?

No, you aren't lucky, this is normal. I think there are some bad ones that go out, but I think the main problem is that people are really picky.

I have the LG on my new E1705 and it is exactly like you're describing (with your Samsung). Great screen after brightness & color adjustment. Minor light leak at the bottom. But again, as I stated in my other post in another thread, I've owned an i9300 and a Sager 5670 and they had the similar minor light leak. It's just how notebook LCDs are.

I am not sure which screen I got, but boy it is pretty nice, no light leakage like I have seen in the other posts, and the colors appear to be spot on. I ran WOW for the first time, and it was like a completely different game.. Very sweet.

How do you tell which panel it is?

texanstc,

My first panel (which I still have) is not bad overall but, when watching some DVDs, the leakage is more evident. I have other notebooks and LCD panels and have no leakage on those. The replacement panel had a bit more leakage and very uneven brightness and contrast across the panel. Maybe I am being picky with the first panel but watching a movie with a lighter color across the bottom for pan and scan DVDs or seeing a grey bar on the bottom rather than that dark black area with widescreen DVDs is not acceptable for me. I am still waiting for the LG...hasn't shipped yet. Don't know what the hold up is, maybe there is a shortage???

What type of adjustments are you guys doing to improve the screen?
Yes...what are you doing? I have an E1705 on the way with the dreaded Samsung WUXGA...my previous Dell bad experience was an M170. Anyway, I can recall being able to adjust colors as far as a "custom" desktop appearance, but I'm thinking that's not what you are all talking about. Are you "adjusting" the colors with the Advanced Video options...(Video Card) ?

How do you find out what screen you have?

Checked on support website to see what has happened with my LG panel. The dispatch was canceled and a new dispatch was set up with the Samsung. The manager I have been dealing with did leave a voicemail for me regarding this but I did not have the opportunity to talk to him. When I checked early this AM the LG was still listed but now only the dispatch number and no part. I am NOT at all happy with this. The message from the mgr. was that the LG is out of stock. Anybody receive the E1705 or 9400 in the last few days with an LG panel? When I called parts last week the part was in stock and could be ordered.

JSR55,

It's not the colors that are bad on the Samsung because you can adjust these to your liking. It's that there can be light leakage from minimal to severe and also unveven brightness and contrast across the screen (varies from Samsung to Samsung). This can not be eliminated unless you turn down the brightness but for some things, such as watching DVDs or doing photo editing, when the brightness has to be increased, the leakage as well as splotchy looking dark colors, is not acceptable, IMO.

Buy a Sony. Not trolling just pointing out the obvious. The screen is obviously extremely important to you for the work you do and it is unlikely without viewing the actual screen you are getting you are going to be happy with the screen from Dell. It is extremely difficult for a company their size with as many different manufacturers as they use to specify a specific part (i.e. LG vs. Samsung).

Being that it is your money and you are entitled to get what works for you I advise the Sony. It will be more money but you will be happier with the screen in the long run.
