White line during boot up of 710M

Ok received today my 710M and I am loving it. The case is stury and well-built. No creaking on the sides like the M140. But I notcied something during its boot up. As it goes through the cycle of displaying the Dell screen and the Windows XP screen a white horizontal line appears briefly on the screen. This happens like three times at different places on the screen. Tried to do a search no the forums if this is something that is happening with others, but did not get any relevant hit. I guess the question is, is this normal that is why it is not being seen or reported or is this something that i have to worry about (i.e. driver, software or hardware problem). Aside from that I don't see anything wrong with the screen, NO light leakage at all!

its like a light really, it flashes briefly while the puter is going through the boot process. It is so obvious because the background is black. I count at least four times that it appears allthroughout the boot. I also have that flicker thing immediately after the desktop appears, which someone in these forums said is just the intel graphics kickin into action. I am more worried about this white line (hard to describe, maybe its similar to when you turn off those old style tv's but it appears very briefly) if it signifies something that will be a problem later.

I just received my 710m last night and it does the same thing. My buddy's 700m does it, as well. I'm not sure what causes it, but maybe it's normal?

Are you sure that it is not the white line (progress bar) that sometimes appears on systems when loading windows?!?!?! I would try defragging the drive and deleteing any files in the PREFETCH folder and then rebooting...It sounds like just the windows progress white bar that is showing up quickly on bootup...

not a status bar in my case. it's a quick flash of a thin white line across the screen when it switches through the different boot screens. after windows is loaded, it doesn't happen.

hey rollyfoster, that is exactly how i will describe the white line that appears on my 710M. So what do you think it is? Anyone out there who has the same thing happening on their 710m or 700m or other models? I will do the defrag thing but I have had other notebooks and desktop in the past and this is the first time I have seen this during boot up.

thanks, those flashing white thin lines is increasing my anxiety levels. I don't want to do a return again after going through that with the M140.

Well, I reinstalled wind'ohs and the lines are still there. I guess it's "normal" 'while the screen is powering up. My buddy with the 710m confirmed his does it too. I haven't called dell because I need weekend minutes for a call like that, but I'm not really too worried about it since it only does it during the boot and not when the system is running.

So you think it is just a normal thing particular to the 710M? But why are other owners of the 710M or the 700M not chiming in that they have it? ANyway, I also got to talk to Dell Tech Support, and she said that as long as the white lines dont appear after WIndows has booted up, then it is nothing to worry about. She said something about going into the bios and checking if the white lines still appear in the bios, but I guess that does not really help since she might not have undestood that thw white lines just flash very briefly while booting up. Anyway, hope you get some luck in getting information from Dell when you make the call.

Anyone out there who has a 710M, please chime in if you see or not see those white lines being described here, thanks.

Those white lines which only appears after POST and before Windows loads is normal. My friend bought an i700m which showed the same symptom. Call Dell and they change to LCD. The new LCD got no white line problem but the colors and backlight was uneven. She prefer the original LCD which has better colors and even backlight. She then ask Dell to reinstall the original LCD.

My guess is the white lines appears only when the screen resolution/refresh rate changes. The LCD takes moment to resynch to the new resolution. The white lines appear at this moment briefly. This white lines problem is characteristic only to this LCD panel. However, this LCD panel is much better than the others. The LCD panel manufacturer is AUO.

If you are still worried, you can call Dell and ask for another LCD.

The Dell staff was correct to say that if the white lines does not appears in Windows, it is okay.

Note: This topics is not new, you have not google enough.

thanks for the explanation, I guess i did not know how to describe it enough to look for it. Anyway, I guess if it is just a characteristic of this particular LCD then it is not a problem, and I agree with your friend it is an awesome screen, I'd rather keep that intact than get something that has a real problem.

I might be wrong but I don't think I have seen this "white line" appear on my 700m during start-up... Maybe from now on, I should stare at the screen when I start my system & post my findings a few weeks from now...

A few weeks from now??? Going somewhere? I think what donny said was it only happens with AUO LCD screens, so your screen might not be fromt eh same manufacturer.

I'm not going anywhere. It's just that I'll use these time frame to be certain with my conclusion of whether I do or do not see that "white line."

By the way, my screen is an AUO (AUO0C02).

hmmm, seems like it does not affect all AUO screens afterall if you dont see any white thin lines flashing. You will definitely see it if you have it.

What screen do you have???

I just got my 710m yesterday. It does have the same symptoms decribed above. I saw this thread before I got it. I was hoping that mine would not do it right off the bat.
Since mine does it and others experience the same thing, I am not going to worry about it. I don't know which screen I have yet.
