How black is black on an LCD screen?

I would be very interested if notebook owners could try a little test with your LCD screen, and post your impressions here.

Very simple. Set your desktop to NONE and make it black. Or run one of the screen diagnostic tests and make it black. Is your screen REALLY black or do you have light bleeding through? Is it black around the perimeter of your screen, as black as the center? I'm asking because my screen (THINKPAD R50P) is NOT black. It is milky black at best. So I am wondering if others see a true dark black or it is more of a milky black. I have tried to fine tune the brightness and it is NOT that, with the brightness all the way up or down there is no effect. I'm sure it is the backlight leaking around the edges. Anyone else see this? I don't recall this "leakage" on my 8600 at all.

Thanks.

Both my 8890 SXGA and Samsung 193T are jet black. The only time I see leakage is if I turn off all the lights and then you can just see the backlighting behind the LCD.

It may be due to a gap between the front bezel of the LCD and the mounting frame. If they don't mate properly then you will get the effect you are describing. Sounds like a warped lid.

On my 8886 screen, the black in the screen is blacker than the case.

Hmmm...what is black? Is it merely a sense of perception, connected to a arbitrary term by empirical knowledge while we are growing up? Is it possible that everyone associates the term with a different perception? It could also be a problem of semantics, i.e. there is no way to define black, intuition is the only way you one can gain a sense of black. Since no one really knows what black is, i guess the question is pointless.

I must have some severe leakage of the backlight around my screen, the left side is much brighter when set to an all black background, there are blooms of "white" around the edge. Oh boy....another return...

That’s normal. Ask at the thinkpads.com forums - http://www.afaonline.com:8080/~2/gue...=%2F~2%2Flogin

If you want true black and white (with minimum backlight leakage) get a Sony GRT270 with XBRITE. They're cheap if you configure them at sonystyle.com

With my brand new 5680 I also notice the same blooms of white on the left side of the screen. Its a little annoying when watching dark DVDs with the lights off. Luckily with any color nearby its cancelled out, and in even a dimly lit room is not noticeable. What is odd is my 3 year old HP Omnibook doesn't suffer from the same problem at all. Your telling me this is normal for a high quality UWXGA screen? Man that sucks. If I press on the front I can make it go away...but it comes back when I let go in any of the 5 areas. Just wondering. Is this even something we can RMA for?

I actually love my 5680! The thing is a beast. The screen is amazing, and totally usable at 1600x1200 (native resolution) sitting 1.5' away. Ghosting is minimal, and I can play BF1942 at 1024x768 all settings maxxed at 50-70fps. At 1600x1200 its playable but I'd need to turn down Aniso filtering and so on. DVDs play great and the sound is decent. I had no deal/bad pixels on mine which I hear is a bit lucky with any laptop.

Overall the thing is very cool, and even while gaming the fans rarely go to high. Two annoying problems are the fans always go to HIGH before dropping to LOW....so in class it can be a bit of a nuisance at times. The fans aren't horribly loud or anything, but the sudden change I think is whats so noticeable. If it only went to low it would kick ass.

The second annoyance will cause me to eventually RMA mine... see there is this feedback problem with the speakers. PCTorque identified it as a motherboard problem, and basically said I need a new one. For example, when I do the dxdiag DX7 8 or 9 spinning cube test - I get a high pitched noise out of the speakers. Moving windows around my screen also causes a bit of noise, and all games produce some hissing, and high pitched clicking. Its entirely audible if the fans are off and you have all sound muted. If the fans are on low, or you have the game sound on its inaudible. In class I don't notice it. Its just nice sometimes to have peace and quiet, and this little bit of noise ruins that. I am not going to RMA it at the moment because its minor, really, and I need the laptop.

Gaming again is just fantastic. NWN, Freedom Force, BF1942, UT2003, WC3, AOE2, The sims, Horizons, and FFXI all run fantastic. Nearly as well as my desktop! 10305 3dmark2001 score, and so its just like a desktop. Resolutions under 1600x1200 are sharp, and entirely usable even for typing and web browsing if you wish.

The battery life is OK. I got 3 hours in class without WiFi using my dual battery and downclocking the CPU with Henrik's tool to about 1Ghz... A week later I ran this setup for about an hour and a half while gaming freedom force. I lost about 33% speed but it was more than playable. I like the hot swap option. Still this laptop is about power and not so much portability.

As a conclusion I think I'd buy this one all over again. The price is amazing, and the speed and features excellent. I am upset with the few problems I have (slight speaker feedback, and fan revving) but we'll see if the fan problem can't be fixed via Henrik's up and coming program. I could turn them off entirely in class and be OK. Assuming this backlightning feedback is normal (like so many seem to think) then I will just leave it. Still might suck if I happen to be watching a DVD in a dark room...not sure yet.

Errr....A Sony GRT270 in place of a Thinkpad R50P. I don't think so. I returned that Thinkpad for another, and this one is much better, dark black all around the border. Just bad luck with the first one.
