Seems that this dang thing fails a lot when writing AND reading dvd's and CD's, where my desktop will do the same disk flawlessly. Have any of you experienced this? Seems to be a Toshiba DVD-RW drive.

hmmm... I've got a TSST (Toshiba-Samsung) DVD burner in my Z71v and it works fine. Maybe you got a bad drive?

I have the same model. It doesnt always screw up, seems to screw up under heavy load like ripping dvd movies.

This certain movie gets about 50% done and starts to make a nasty grinding noise like you get when a DVD is scratched or the DVD is 'searching', or whatever it does.

You might have a bad drive, or like I've read over at www.notebookreview.com forums and on here that this drive is really finicky about what type of media you use.

Hope that helps some, so try another brand of discs.

Cheers,
Mike

the defective rates are pretty much the same as other manufactures, years ago Asus uses only Matsushita/Panasonic drives has the same defective rate, only Matsushita/Panasonic drives is noticebaly louder.
