When i boot up the computer it keeps saying

invalid system disk
Replace the disck, and then press any key

I've tried swapping the hard drives and had the same error message. I've hitting del to get to the bios but cant.

Without the hard disk i obvioulsy get

Insert system diskette and press enter to reboot

If i can get to the bios i can probably try formatting the drives. how do i do this? i cant find a manual.

Do i need to reset the cmos? anything? any ideas?

Not sure what to tell you. But if you really want to format your drive, you don't need to do it from the bios. You can try booting off a CD or a floppy and doing it that way.

Did the hard drive that you swapped in have Windows XP on it already?

no it had nothing on it. but see the reason i need to get to the bios is to set up the laptop to check the CD-ROM drive first.

I found this article that had a bunch of different ways to get to bios during boot, depending on Manufacturer. One of them may work?

http://www.pcuser.com.au/pcuser/hs2....256E6D003D7A2D

It recommended using <cntl>+<alt>+<esc> for Acer's...

There was also a post toward the top of the page on how to remove a bios password, but it wasn't very clear...a quick internet search found that the poster was talking about removing the CMOS battery from the motherboard. I also found this article, which seems pretty helpful:
