5672 noob memory question.

Well the 5672 i ordered will come with 1gb of 533mhz memory.. will it be bad to throw in a nother 1gb but 667ghz instead? is mixing bad? should i just wait until i have enough money to buy 2 brand new stiks of 667?

its usually not a good idea to mix memory these days, as dual banking is generally enabled on modern motherboards, where the system writes to both memory chips at the same time to increase speed.

for this to work efficiently memory needs to be at the same speed

if you are lucky your system will just underclock the 667 ram and run in single channel mode. But often I have seen boot failures as a result

hrumm, ive never had a problem (depending on the chipset) of mixing ram

of course then again i havnt done that to a laptop, i did it on amd platform and intel desktop tho......and did benchmarks, and most review sites are right.......you gain 3-10% by having dual channel working and on.......so its barely any, to little improvement in gain........

but to joy.......my plan is to sell the ram it comes with, and just getting a gig of 667 if i can.....if not, it wont hurt me one bit, ram doesnt "need" to be matched up to the proper speed......

i will probably sell the stock ram too.. i was checking out the gigaram at new egg.. it has good reviews... a stick of 1gb 667 is only 96 dollars i think.. but ill wait until i have more money..LOL.

I know you can mix ram soulsaver, its not always adviseable though
and some brands can be really funny about running with other brands

I have been building pc's for around 7 years, and getting matching ram saves a lot of headaches

Keep in mind that your 5672 will likely come with 2 512mb modules, not a single 1gb one. To go to 2gb, you'll need to remove the 512's, and install the 1gb's.

yea i will probably sell them.. i was just curious because on my older desktops.. i used to mix memory and it was fine... but laptops are different... and also newer. heh.

Laptops aren't that different from desktops, the kit is just crammed in a bit tighter,
but yes you have the right idea about selling your ram and buying new

and i understand, matching it does help, and some ram runs better on certin chipsets than others, just saying you can, you might run into some issues, but all in all if you can match the ram by all means, if your on a buget

i havent been building as long as you have, ive built 3 of the 4 desktops ive owned, and owned 2 laptops so far, in about a 5 year span

and i really lothe page computers........ive had to reorder 2 times for some unknown reason keeps getting put on hold

Not trying to sound like a salesmen, and I have absolutely NO affiliation, but I ordered mine from PC Connection, over the phone on a Saturday (even though it was about $90 more) and I was VERY impressed with them. I ordered on a debit card so their "loss prevention department" called me on Monday to let me know that if it was a debit card, my bank would likely reject it because most banks have a smallish cap on daily limits. I said run it, and the bank kicked it bank, so I had to go through some stuff with my bank until about 11:00 Monday morning. I orderd it with 2 day shipping (so Wednesday), but it came on Tuesday! Faster than advertised.

We shall see what happens if I have to return the machine because Acer can't (or doen't know how) to fix it...

they tried putting mine on hold, they didnt even call me. They just sent me an email.. i was like wow.. i just paid 47 bucks for second day.. So i decided to call them and start some trouble... finally the girl was like lets do a three way conference with some stupid bank guy.. got it clear and my order was shipped! .... you gotta give em trouble...LOL

lol my bank called me to check that the transaction was not fraudulent which was nice of them, but they let it go through as they could claw it back before delivery, if I had said no.

I am surprised that the bank dare do a daily limit on anything other than ATM transactions. here in the UK all transactions go through from a store unless it is really large, (like when I went for my currency for my holidays) then they do a call to the bank.

p.s. dont get me wrong guys either, I am not saying dont mix memory, its just always been the first kickback if anything doesnt work, which can mean getting to the root of the real problem takes a lot longer
