which wireless brand?

The last thing I need to order for my msi 1032 build is a mini pci wireless card. I want something good as this machine is for my deployment to Iraq and I don't want it crapping out and i want something strong.

I'm looking on newegg and there are few options:

Asus brand which boasts an 19db power output (11mb) which is the highest output of one ones listed.

There are a couple MSI which could be a no brainer for compatibility (the that includes BT is out of stock, but I can't think of any reason I would need that).

And then there is good 'ol Intel brand (2 different models.

In one hand I'm thinking that the asus looks good with the 19db of power...I'm not sure what kind of internet access I will have overseas but if its wireless I want the strongest signal possible of course. In the actual installation manual for the 1032 notebook it shows an intel card being installed in the example.

This system will probably be my soul source of communication while I'm gone as well as entertainment. I have been running a dual boot of Ubuntu and XP on my work laptop and I am thinking I will do the same. XP for games and what not and linux for regular use and to continue my learning curve.

Thanks for any input.

Thank you for that amazing reply, Captain Obvious.

Anyway, back to the topic: I love my Intel integrated wireless, I'd buy them again. I also hold Asus in high regard... but if I had to pick between the two I'd go with Intel 'cause I know it works and when I know something works, I don't needlessly change.

what's so obvious?? Every component has either an overall good or bad review or experience with it. I guess maybe people just don't put as much thought into the wireless hardware or not many have the option to choose. I wouldn't ask the question if it didn't really mean something to me. This build is to last me over a year while in Iraq, I'm not just going to throw any old hardware into it.

Thanks for the Intel sway though, I figured that the intel card might serve better for compatibility in both XP and linux but I'm still curious if anyone has experience with any of the Asus brand wifi cards...the little extra power output might be nice to have.

Look into Atheros Cards... they have been known to have a better (stronger/less drops) than then intel cards.

thanks, I actually just happened upon the topics for Atheros and that definately sounds like the way to go. I posted in the group buy to see if it was still going.

Well, I was talking 2915 but okay... fanboy.

I've heard the same, Intel cards are good, but they tend to have less range, which sometimes results in a weaker signal/dropped connection in certain situations.

And that's like 500 MHz right there.

lol@centrino and Intel's marketing that people fall for.

BrentPresley was thoughtfull enough to send me a brand new shiny "centrino" sticker with my recent purchase from him. I had a feeling that stickers like this added performance similiar to the way they do on cars!

Don't look for a "brand" as they all use common components. Look for certain chipsets.

Atheros and Intersil/Prism are at the top, with the best features and compatability. Intel chips are mediocre, but work very well in Centrino configurations to save battery life.
