Upgrade from Centrino to Core DUO in i9300

Well, long story short. I was on tech support with a Dell Agent and when at the end they ask if you have any other questions or concerns to let them know, and while hes saying that I'm thinking, "Man, I wish I had a dual core processor in my laptop." So I ask, "Hey, is this possible.", and to my suprise he says that the two processors (Centrino and Core Duo) use the same socket and it can be done. Once I can find a Core Duo chip I'm putting it in this bad boy. I had no idea this was possible....

Sorry it is not possible. They both have 478 pins, but with different pin-outs and different chipsets. Don't listen to Dell, they'll say whatever they can to keep you 'happy'.

Are there any pin-pin comparison charts?

From what I understand this is a chipset thing. The Chipset on 9300 is different for 9400. The new chipset added the Dual Core support. There may also be pin changes as well.

at http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=2627 you can see that the blank pin has physically moved to prevent accidental placement of a yonah chip in a dothan socket or vice-versa.

Here is another Pin Comparison.

seems to me, from the majority of the posts, that most users on here think that dell reps have an idea what they are saying.

they dont, and never will. id say 1 out of 10 is knowledgible about cpu swaps.

i think ive read several posts in the past few days even that have people worshipping what an online rep says!

I have to say I'm surprised anyone believes a word a Dell rep says, they're certainly creative but they mostly seem to talk a lot of rubbish.

Given this question seems to be asked over and over again I really think we need a sticky answering it...

I wouldn't trust any tech guy that calls the processor "centrino"

someone posted a dell chat session in another thread yesterday...it said...

"... the 915 chipset is not compatible with the 915 chipset..."

and this person believed them? anyone notice the problem in the sentence?

good lord. please dell, build me a PC, not!
