Exactly!

But on a laptop anthing over 60 fps is pointless, because the LCD works at an constant 60hz.

And take into account that some people saying that 30 fps is enough, are usually non-gamers. I.e. very young or older people (30+).

From somebody that has been working with hz for over 16 years (purely gaming), trust me you want a minimum of 40 FPS (below which is too jerky) in fast paced games, and a maximum of 70 FPS (above which you cannot see anyway).

So if your getting less than 40 FPS (ok 35-45 fps)-->reduce detail/res

If your getting more than 70 FPS increase detail/res.

Games like Deus Ex 1 and Commanche 4 at the time could not achieve 60 FPS so they use the "cinematic" method of rendering the games. till this day commanche can almost hit 60 fps!

Not entirely true .. Yes the screen does operate at 60hz but thats not a factor as there are no scan lines on a LCD as there are on a CRT. A LCD refreshes per Pixels. On a LCD you need to worry about the response time on milliseconds for ghosting effects .. For the game itself you still need enough FPS to make the scene look smooth .. So that magic FPS number is going to depend on the detail and complexity of the scene being rendered ..

I work with hz also .. hz, khz, mhz, ghz ... basically anything from 1 Khz to 30Ghz at the Satellite Communications Facility I help run for the Dept of Defense ..

I feel your pain Gold.

Two things I would suggest anyone reading that article are 1) who is Steven Harness and more importantly, who is his boss and even more importantly, who does he work for? (in other words, is there a corelation between advertising revenue from FPS hype and editorial content and conclusion) and 2) does the term "interlacing" mean anything in regard to TV and older monitors?

Beyond that, do you really imagine the motion picture folks simply whipped out a number for FPS to use. No, they did live tests with large numbers of people who gave them both objective and subject responses. Then then tried it out over what became decades, constantly diddling with it.

Lastly, human vision has little in common with computer video systems. For one thing, most of what we "see" is actually imagined, filled in by our minds from memories and per our expectations. The other factor there is that human vision is a reception system while computer video is a broadcast system.

But I agree with Gold, pretty much anything over 70 to 80 FPS is fluff, particularly if you are using a digital LCD screen.
