Inspiron 6000 vs. 9300 - need help ASAP!

Okay, the obivous question: what will I be using it for?- I have a nice desktop system with 7800GT, 3.2ghz, 1gb RAM (and Dell 2001fp flat screen) and am thinking about replacing it with the 9300 or just getting a 6000D. I play Battlefield 2, listen to lots of music, convert and watch videos, etc. I have the opportunity to buy one of the following:

Inspiron 6000D:

Used (couple months- but like new)
9-cell battery
x300 128mb
60gb HD
1.6ghz
PRICE: $650-

Inspiron 9300:

New w/ 3 year warranty and accidental coverage
6800 go
80gb HD
PRICE: $900-

both have 512mb, so I'd have to update either. Now my wife has basically said if I spend $900 on the laptop, I gotta sell my desktop, which would be okay. I'd buy another 9-cell and 1gb RAM, so the whole thing would cost just over $1000.

PLEASE if you read this just tell me which one you think is the better deal and if I'm crazy to ditch my desktop for gaming (in which case I should go with 6000D).

I am making the decision in the next couple hours so advice is MUCH appreciated.

thanks!

An X300 is going to be a massive stepdown from a 7800GT, if you want to carry on gaming the 9300 is the only consideration of your two choices but even that's going to be a fairly large stepdown.

Get the 9300, you won't be disappointed. If you want more power, you always have the option of the 7800gtx.

so the 6800 go is going to be a MASSIVE stepdown from my current rig?- I don't want to kick myself in the a** after committing to a laptop.

Okay, so far 3 votes for 9300. I am just going back and forth on this one- I mean, the 6000 is a killer deal as well, wouldn't require a new battery... ugh! More help PLZ!

ALSO: aside from preference, how are these two deals, cuz to me they seem pretty HOT? Which one is a better deal just strictly in terms of market value (not that it matters, but I'd be interested to know)?

cheers and keep the help coming plz.

What sort of resolution and settings are you using to play your games? If you're going to upgrade to a 7800GTX on it (which opens another barrel of worms) you wouldn't of course have any performance drop but I'd say going down to a 6800go is going to be a noticeable drop.

I wouldn't consider the 6000 at all unless you're not bothered about gaming - I realise some people will object to this statement as they are happily gaming with their X300s and that's fair enough, it's just I think it's such a large drop from a 7800GT.

interesting input, john. i doubt i'd upgrade right away to the 7800gtx but would wait til my current system sells (maybe 1-2 months). I have a Dell 20" flat screen (2001fp) with a 1600X1200 native, so that's the resolution I prefer, though for battlefield 2 I drop down a bit to increase fps.

any more input? i'm starting to lean towards to 9300 quite heavily and a possible 7800gtx upgrade later on... I'm still wondering however if I am correct in thinking that $900 is extremely good for the laptop...

lollavid1, have you ever played games on a laptop before for more than 2 hours? I would never consider ditching my gaming desktop for a gaming laptop...even with similar specs. Laptops just won't give you the same experience that a desktop does. If I was you, I would get neither notebooks, as the deal seems to just be OK. If you wait out, you will find a better notebook than 9300 for round-about the same price. Your money, your decision!

first you say not to get a laptop to replace a desktop pc, for gaming purposes, but then you say to wait for a better laptop? what are you you trying to say? ^^

I'd go for the 9300 RIGHT NOW. I would have if, at the time I bought the 6000, it was in my price range, but it wasn't...back in Dec 2005.

Well, if you read the opening post, the guy says that he would have to sell his desktop IF the laptop costs $900. Therefore, lollavid1 should wait out for HOT deal on a gaming notebook so he wont have to see his desktop (because desktop are so much better at gaming)!

I hope this makes it clear for you, storino03.

well, I am under the impression that $900 for a brand new Inspiron 9300 w/ 3year warranty is a HOT deal... or am I mistaken? Anyways, I've gone for it and will be picking it up later today.

I appreciate the help and am still open to advice. I bought 1gb (2X512) for $55 and, while I know many suggest more, I think that should be sufficient. I am not gaming as much as I used to and just love the idea of the portability of this thing. I'm still pondering getting another battery and eventually upgrading to the 7800gtx.

the 9300 IS bigger than the 6000, both in weight and dimensions, but you should be happy with it.

Comparing the two choices, the only reason I would get the I6000D is if you need it for portable. You get a better video card, larger hard drive and a three year extended warranty for $250 more. I think it's worth it.

9300, no question.

and i have a 6000, so i have experience with it. its a great great laptop, but gaming....get the 9300 (you get more bang for your buck)

Get the 9300 and keep the desktop. sleep on the couch for a couple days if that's what it takes.

Getting the 6000d is not a good decision even for $650.

If your dead set on dumping the desktop, then the 9300 is the only way to go for a laptop with your gaming needs. And, for the record, I own a 6000 and like it. But if I was limited to just one PC, the 6000 wouldn't be it due to the video card.

My 2 cents.
