So, obviously what you're saying is wrong.
Actually, Dell is overstocked on all Core Duo and Pentium-D CPU's.... they just cut back they latest order with Intel, and so did all the other major brands. There is no CPU shortage of any kind right now. The rep is lying to you... and they keep notes of what they say, so the other reps just play along.

Unluckily though, weekend now, so I'll probably get it sometime next week.

Definately sure about that then

New Zealand. Makes more sense now.

U.S. wont see them for a while.

So is a Pentium M a better choice than a P4? If this dell isn't going to work right, I don't want it. That's why I'm looking at other companies so much.
A pentium m is a better choice than a P4. A core duo is still a much better choice than the PM however. Core duo is not a dell specific product, btw. I don't think it's very likely your dell "won't work right." I think that what you're seeing on here is that a lot of people on these boards are very up tight about their LCDs and whatnot. The other thing you see is that someone unhappy or having problems is FAR more likely to post about that than someone who is satisfied and enjoying their laptop.

It sounds like you have a e1705 on order with the 7800 in it and that you're worried about having a laptop that will last a while and play future games and programs. I think that the e1705 with a 7800 in it will fit those criterea better than either of the machines you've linked to and also better than the vast majority of laptops out there.

For me, the amazing warranties and return policies available with Dell are the main selling point for their laptops. More so than with any other vendor I'm aware of, I feel like you can buy a dell laptop with peace of mind that if something goes awry, it'll get fixed.

I have the 4 year complete care warranty on my laptop (which is about a year and a half old) and it has already more than paid for itself. I've gotten a free new 9 cell battery, a free upgrade to an 8x dvd+/-r DL burner (from 4x dvd+r) and a new lcd. If I had done each of those things myself, I'd already be looking at $600 probably.... all free.

My older IBM laptop sits in a drawer someplace collecting dust since when parts of it died, I didn't want to spend my money money replacing them, so it is completely non-functional. (IBM was known for its bomb-proof business-class laptops.... and look where that got me) So anyway, long story short, I (personally) would hesistate to buy a no-name laptop, and wouldn't hesitate to buy (or recommend) a dell (laptop).

I just find it strange that there's this huge worldwide shortage of 7800 Go GPU cards, and (apparently) no shortage of 7800 GTX ...

Or have I got this all back to right
The 7800 GTX has been pulled from the UK Dell Website. Only Options I can find now are 6800 Ultras. Thats in the XPS Btw.

e1705 better than the XPS m170 or is it going to be out of date too soon?
for anything other than pure 3d gaming graphics, the e1705 is better than the xps m170. In terms of pure 3d horsepower, the xps still wins.

In a few weeks(maybe as much as 2months) dell will release an updated xps (m1710) which should have the same processors as the e1705 (which is a very good thing) and it should have the new 7900 go GTX graphics card, which will be the best around (once it's released).

I want gaming....I don't do any really heavy computer applications. I also want stability. I also may be able to get some more money off the XPS by haggling with Dell. I'm pretty sure the XPS will do most the things I need, but will it be able to handle games for the next 5 years or so?
No laptop (or even desktop... not even a $10,000 one) will be able to handle new games 5 years from now.

Let's look back 5 years at a top of the line desktop: your GeForce3 running on a (first generation) 1.5GHz Pentium 4, which is running windows ME with directx 8.0a.

Can that system run FEAR today? no, no, and hell no.

Were it me making the decision above, however.... I would go for the e1705. I am a fairly heavy multitasker, and I love to recompress video (dvd9->dvd5 specifically). I am also most vertainly a gamer. I think that the core duo will give you a better user experience now and in 3 years. Also, the e1705 is going to be far more upgradable.

It's unlikely there will be any more upgrades possible to the xps, whereas the e1705 will be upgradeable to merom, and proabably 7800->7900 or more.

Are you kidding? Almost NO system can run FEAR today Just look at the readme file:

You should avoid resolutions above 1024x768 on any current generation card.
Although I do run mine at 1920x1200, just with AA off (I don't think it's needed at full panel res) and a few of the more GPU-intensive details turned down. You'd probably need some sort of SLI setup to run it at full res + all details on maximum with a good framerate.

Well, I don't care about having full details all the time. I'm use to having stuff turned down. It'd be nice though.
Having AA turned off isn't a bad idea at that high res at all.

I'd like to see you run it with those same settings, but with HDR on (do they make that for FEAR?)

I'm staying with this setup, it may take awhile...but for price and value I think this is a good choice. As long as my 2 yr warranty covers most problems, I'm good to go. I don't really experiment with my stuff. Will probably game and watch movies, and write papers for college. That's about it.
