slow internet from sharing a connection?

As stated in an earlier post I have a wireless router with 1 desktop wired to it and a laptop and a desktop using wireless. Ever since I got home from school and have my laptop on the same connection everything seems to slow down a lot and it has been a common occurance for pages to time out. It is a major pain in the ass. Is this a common side effect of sharing a connection? My signal is 54.0mbps and is strong. Anything I can do to make things run smoother?

The more computers you have hooked up on a network, and are using bandwidth, will slow down your overall connection. Found this out when I played UO as a kid, and my brother would do major file transfers while he was at work. So I would go into his room, pause all transfers, and continue with my gaming, lag-free =)

If these computers aren't really doing anything, you could just turn them off completely, might help a bit.

Is there any program to show how the bandwith is being used?

DSLreports has a bandwith test area.

Update the firmware on the router

If the router is configured for DHCP, set DNS static to what your ISP provides.

The router may have an issue with slow to resolve DNS.

Connection type stays the same. Provided that your router is actually connected to the net. Verify this by checking the status screen on the router.

Before taking the step to set DNS static on the router, try this.

If you have XP:
go into the TCP/IP settings of your network card and enter the following DNS IP address.

DNS1 207.217.120.83
DNS2 207.217.77.82

If the computer with these DNS address works, then DNS set static on the router should take care of it.
