acer 5670/5672 dvd writer

the dvd writer is curretly a Mashita uj-845s (panasonic) firmware d201

can everyone else list what dvd multi dvd writer/drive they have?

I'm currently using the included software to burn dvds as for now.. because I was just backing up everything before I'd blow everything away.

anyone notice when they burn dvds its slow slow burning them at the rated speeds for dvds? here are the following dvd-r's blanks I've have used so far and they don't burn not even at 8x.. more like 1-2x only.

memorex 16x
fuji film 8x
maxells 8x
maxells 4x
ty
ritecks 2x
sony 8x
verbatiums 16x & 8x
philips

anyone have any luck in any type of media in burn speeds above 4x ?? or even 8x burns???

I think its the included software thats doing things wrong

thank I will look into what speeds it burns after I'd blow away the acer os and put a fresh install of the os.. and then try nero.. 6.6.0

i've been having the same problem! i've been through 3 different types of media RiData, No-name, and HP and all of them it says it can only write at 2x Max. When i go into drive properties though it says its "capable" of 8x writing, but won't for these disks... is anyone actually experencing the 8x writing speeds on the 5672? if so with what meda? brand? -R or +R?

Thanks guys... this is just really upsetting, i burn a lot of dvd's and my $35 LG DVD Burner is outperforming this thing but 1000000%!

oh and i have the Uj-845S with 201 firmware

I was using decrypter to burn yesterday, and I deliberately set it to 4x
actual reported speed for disk1 as between 3.5 and 3.9x
but then I inserted another disk and tried again, and the speed dropped down to between 2.5. and 3.2x
very strange
must be the drive

doesnt bother me too much as I dont burn that much data off, but I can see it annoying more regular users

on other threads people have been complaining about drive noise too
I can confirm that mine every so often makes a quiet sort of grinding noise, but more electronic than mechanical. very strange

I still love the slot loader though, that thing is not only cool but will stop me breaking it

I just did a quick test and I burned 3.5GB in a little under 12 minutes - this definitely seems slow - not quite 2x - but certainly not 8x. If I get a chance this weekend I will pop the drive out and put in the NEC 6550 DVD burner from one of my Dells in and see the comparison.

This burn was done with Nero 7 Premium.

oobunker, let me know how that nec 6600 drive works, are you taking out the old mashita 845s dvd rom drive out to insert into a new nec drive???

can you guys list and media you are all using to test this? err writing speeds so far?

when I'd burned the dvds for acer backups it took an hour to burn 2 gigs... what is that ??

updates: just burned a cd-r. took 10 mins to burn @ 24x..

I have the speed issue regardless of media if I am using DVD-R disks. Max speed of 2x. If I use DVD+R it will record with a max of 8. Haven't tried dual layer. Have used nero, dvd-decrypt and NTI gold. Same results with all the programs.

I checked to make sure that the drive access was not pio.

I have a 5672WLMi.

OK -I was able to do some testing today. I burned the same 4500MB using three different 8x DVD Burners:

Dell (Sony) DW-D56a
Dell (NEC) ND-6650a
And the stock Acer (Matshita/Panasonic) DVD-RAM UJ-845

All three of them burned the same exact data set within seconds of each other: ~4500MB in 13 or so minutes. I used Nero 7 Premium and I used the "Determine Maximum Speed" button checked for each burn with each drive.

Anybody else have any comments? These are definately 4x speeds. Maybe it's picky about media? I was using Sony DVD+R media.

I called acer about the problem... so far i've tried 4 different -R DVD media and have yet to find one that will even work at 4x let along 8x. The same media i used LG-8x burner and they burned at 8x... 4500MB file would take about 12 minutes...

Did you get any sort of response about it?

In my instance - 2 confirmed 8x DVD Burners (that burn at 8x no problem in a Dell x300, D410, D600, and 610) only burn at 4x on the Acer...These were directly plugged in to the laptop just as the stock drive.

Just picked up the Maxcell 8x DVD+R 50pack, and they only burn at 2.4x compaired to the 2x i get with the DVD-R... Maybe we should start a new sticky with only the brand, speed listed at, and speed obtained and price...

Did you get any sort of response from Acer about the drive?

I submit a ticket online today about it. It's not really a deal breaker, but it certainly is annoying. The fact that it happens on 2 other drives makes me think it is not the drive, but some the bus or some other configuration of the machine. I have tried to look for settings to change in Device Manager, etc. but haven't found anything.
they just want to replace it! even though i'm pretty sure its not a drive problem... i think its intimidating for them when the customer knows more then them, they just offer free replacements...
I just did a burn with Alcohol - 4.1x average speed. I saw it peak up to 6.4x but it should be much higher.

I got a response from Acer on this:
Quote:

Thank you for contacting Acer America. Acer America does not have a
firmware update for the drive. You can try checking the vendor's site to
see if they offer a firmware update.
Doesn't sound promising. I fired back and asked if she would consider this a confirmed problem. Haven't heard back yet.
She wrote back after two days and confirmed that this is a known problem and that we are basically waiting for a firmware update from the drive OEM.
