USB 2.0 powered ext. DVD?

Hey everyone.
I tried searching, but didn't come up with much (when it worked...) on USB-powered external DVD drives.

My lappy is one of the "ultraportable" breeds...which means no internal optical drives.
It came stock with an external 6X CD-Rom that still works fine....but I've come to realize that there are some times when you'd really like to have a DVD-Rom around.

I wanted to see if you guys had any suggestions or recommendations (or if anyone is trying to get rid of one).

A DVD-R/RW would be exceptional!

Thanks!

I bought an external slim dvd rom off of ebay. Runs on USB power but requires two usb headers. I took out the dvd rom and replaced it with a slot loaded panasonic DVDRW and I haven't had issues with it. Try ebay, the guy seems to have a business selling them.

I know this thread is kinda old, but does anybody have any experience with the Asus drive above?
The NewEgg page doesnt mention it as being USB-powered anywhere.

I think LaCie makes one, but the websites dont like to list the power sources of the drives, if that makes any sense.

I must have been tired in the head. Disregard the former post. That one is external powered with USB connection options. Apologies for the misdirection.

And that device can be USB powered. If you want an optical drive powered solely by 1 USB slot, then there is no such thing. Slim optical drives exceed the 5 volt 500ma (2.5 watt) power spec for USB.

I have been looking at this one. It sounds like it will operate on one port and since it uses a battery to supplement the usb power it should be fine. Just make sure it's charged before you use it.

It's my understanding USB-powered drives take up 2 slots, supplying enough power to get the drive going.

Thanks Psychotic_UK!
(Although, it might be cheaper to get that battery-powered enclosure and throw in a faster drive)

The enclosure you linked to still requires a 2nd USB slot to function.

If you want something cheaper than what Newegg is selling, here's where I got mine:

http://www.centrix-intl.com/

I haven't had any problems with the one I got. They even include the 2nd cable with a split USB/ PS2 cable to draw additional power from.

Add $80-$130 for the drive itself, and you can make your own for under $150

Are there any that are a tad bit cheaper then this because i would be interested in getting one of these also.

What do you mean by "a tad bit cheaper"? $15 is too much?
if you have the room i would go with a 5.25" Enclosure + Pioneer DVR110D Reflashed to RPC1

yeah its bigger, yeah it takes AC, yeah theres a power brick, but what USB Powered DVD drive can rip a dvd9 in 11 minutes with DL±R burning capability? its vastly superior and WAY cheaper, its only like $40 Canadian for that pioneer drive now and the enclosure is probably $30-$45
