Finally got my new DV8000t

I'm wondering about drivers..

I can only get the Audio, and Softmodem, and Nvidia drivers from hp's site.

Folks tell me drivers are in the recovery partition, but I can't get into that to burn copies of the drivers (unless someone knows how?...)

I found the Wlan drivers on intel's site, though they are generic (is that going to be a problem?) Can I use the drivers from the DV8000z, and be alright?

I'm also wondering about the quickplay, if I wipe all of the partitions out, I assume that's gone forever? Which partition can I (should I) whipe out, as I don't need the recovery info, waste of space on my drive.

I want to load xp pro on it today, along with my 2gb ddr2 533 ram, so I can actually start using my new lappy!

Thanks ahead of time for help and advice!

I don't know if you have burned the recovery disc , maybe they can be accessed there but why mess with it , it is brand new

Thanks, Tried the recovery discs as well, locked, and can't access. True, it's brand new, but the quantity of junk that's loaded on it bogs it down. It will be faster and cleaner, and I purposely ordered it with xp, as I have xp pro to load on it (why pay more for it when I already have it )

Ok, thanks to a post from Flashram, found my drivers.

They are in c:\swsetup for anyone that is intending on reloading their dv8000t/nx9420

Now I'm in reloading land, will post info/pics when I'm done
post #5 of 19
pics?? when did you order it btw, and can you post your configuration please. thanks.

Ordered 3/1/6, got it 3/23/6

My config is in my signature. Pics will be coming, have been tied up and not able to get it all reloaded yet (pc's crashing left and right)..
well I tested my dv8000t tonight with realflight g2 flight sim . cpu usage was stable at about 22%. I might remove the hp games which came on the computer but can't see messing with anything else . The computer works superb. I am very happy with my choice . The only thing I am not happy with is the tv tuner it a little blurred . It might be I just don't have it set up properly . I want it to look as good as watching a dvd , anyone have any input ? I even tried a direct tv sat box and it looks the same .

Well, after picking up my usb floppy drive from my office, I got my dv8000t reloaded... Shall we say it's fast?! I should think so!!

Did have one small issue, wondering if anyone else has reloaded their dv8000t, and gotten their audio drivers to reload? I can't seem to get them to stick, both from my backup of the drivers that came preloaded, or from hp's site, and downloading/installing it. Says failure everytime I try it... Any idears anyone?

XP Pro Scratch Install DV8000t

Anyone have any luck with linux on this machine yet (dv800t, duo 1.6Ghz, 512M, 80G, DVDRW, 8945ABG Intel Wireless, 1680x1050 17'')?

Loading XP Pro from scratch was a pain...

Had to download the SATA driver from Intel (945PM chipset...there is a floppy driver disk creator util on the Intel website - look for F6FLPY32.ZIP on google for the x86 version of this util...download, create floppy, boot into xp installer, press F6 to specify SCSI or other disk driver..then follow on screen prompts).

Once XP Pro was installed, the wifi card just worked for me. This allowed me to connect to HP's website and download the drivers from the dv8000t support section. The first iteration through this, I tried to install the drivers in order listed. This did not work for me and put the system into a very strange state...dev manager kept saying that all the resources were used and to free some up..etc, etc. Trying to install the chipset drivers (generic) from intel's website proved fruitless. Decided to install again (had to partition the HD for linux, anyway) from scratch. The second iteration, I installed the XP essential update service pack supplied by hp FIRST. This seemed to find the 945PM chipset and most other hardware that was problematic the first time around. Next, I simply downloaded the drivers from the hp website in order and installed. Everything went smoothly this time around with the exception of two devices, the 100mbps nic card and a "Mass Storage Device". To save someone else trouble in the future, the hardwired nic (non-wifi) shows up as this:
Intel Pro/100 VE Network Connection
The device manager (and even lspci -v in linux with a 2.6.11 kernel) shows this as an intel 8086-1902 device (unknown). I just happen to copy off the windows system32 and inf files before scratching the system (the recovery disks that HP allows you to burn did not seem to be useful at all for loading single drivers). Anyway, the search string "Prounstl.exe" on google or intel's website should provide a working binary for this device.
The "mass storage device" is another "unknown device" to both linux and windows xp pro SP2 (at least on my dv800t). This is the TI PCIxx12 Integrated FlashMedia Controller and wanted the tifm21.sys file to make it stop crying.

Other than those two headaches, the machine seems to run okay. The DVD buttons are useless at this time the best I can tell if you don't have the HP DVD software installed.

I'm looking for anyone's experiences with getting this thing running under linux, as well. I've downloaded the devel versions of the ipw8945 drivers (and all the current supporting packages listed on the sourceforge site), but haven't upgraded the stock FC4 2.6.11 kernel to 2.6.13 as the developers suggest. Also, I would imagine that the chipset needs a bit of pampering to make it work right, along with some other drivers for various devices (although sound seems to work alright out of the box).

The following is from the "unknown devices" utility free for download of the final working xp pro sp2 scratch install (not provided by hp with all the crapware they try to shove down our throats...*terrible* of them to do. they don't do that nearly as bad with the business pc's!):

This is geared towards my CTO build...you're details may (and probably will) vary some!

Gpowers01,

Good info on the XP Pro, format /Clean install !!!

(I would assume you used a copy of XP you already had, right, not the disc supplied by HP on some machines that you have to pay $10 extra for?)

Got to ask since my dv8000t is on order..

Been looking on the HP site for the "XP essential update service pack supplied by hp".... Don't see it.
(Seems if it was "essential" they should have it on the site, eh?)

I would assume this is on one of the cd's? or is it on the hd?

Another question, once you got XP Pro installed, and manually installed those few drivers you were talking about (copy off the windows system32 and inf files before scratching the system) everything's "working", right?

One last thing since you're a Linux user.... Check out this thread on the Quick Play v 2.0 being talking about there and see if you can "extract", copy, image, or make an installer to re-install the app Hp calls Quick Play.

Quick Play appears to be a Linux app.... It would be greatly appreciated by a bunch of people if you could figure out a way to may a back-up copy of it since HP does not offer a download of the app.

Since you're a Linux user and by your previous post I would assume this to be "childs play" for you. :-) Look forward to hearing back from you.

PS: Is this the Unknown Device Identifier 5.02 you're talking about that gave you the above printout? : http://www.zhangduo.com/udi.html

My XP Pro reformat came out fine. All drivers, including the HDD drivers were located in the c:\swsetup folder, so just burned a copy of that whole folder to dvd. Still have to have a usb floppy to load the sata driver (hit F6 when windows setup asks). The hdd folder in c:\swsetup has a floppy creator with all of the drivers on it as well. The essential update is also located in the c:\swsetup, so you can load that from your burned copy. After getting the drivers figured out, lappy works incredibly well. Pulls 2004 3dMark05 score with a 5640 for processor. And does super PI to 2M in 1m13s

Mine did exactly the same 1m 13secs. i havent reformated btw.

Has anybody GHOSTED, or imaged the hd Or the QuickPlay partition before formatting to retain Quick Play v2.0?
For those that have gotten their dv8000t recently- Is HP providing a cd with QuickPlay 2.0 on it, has anyone found it on the "recovery" discs yet?
(If so there would be no need to GHOST, or Image the hd before formating /wipping the drive clean.:-)

One poster in the below thread I believe said his machine from a while back shipped with v1.1 cd /program, that it was part of the recovery/install discs.)

Don't know the in's and out's on the QuickPlay and I might be wrong on a couple of facts but the wife isn't going to be "happy" if I nuke the hd... and i can't get it back.

It's going to be bad enough when my unit gets in to get Windows re-installed /get everything configured... Would like to get it done by the time she gets back if you know what I mean...

At least I have a brand-new in the box USB floppy drive around here somewhere... so at least installing the SATA drivers isn't going to be a big deal:-)

BELOW is from another post:

What is HP QuickPlay?

QuickPlay 2.0 allows you to to play a DVD movie, Play Video Clips, Play a cd without booting into the OS. (Turns the notebook into a $2,000 CD/DVD player. Version 1.1 allowed you to do that, plus I think being able to access music files on the hard disc, them having to be stored in a special folder, "Shared Music" ) Ver 2.0 from the very limited reading I've done on it expands on that allowing a search of the hd, plus expanded features. (see below double speak release from HP)

QuickPlay 2.0(2) technology with improved user interface, choice of direct and windows and dedicated media control. Apart from the existing feature like search and play music or video in the hard disk, enhanced QuickPlay 2.0 also allows users to view photos in the hard disk and even in the memory card slot.

* * * * * * * *

BTW: QP v2 will use 1GB of space , instead of the current 204MB for QP v1.

Like QuickPlay V1. QuickPlay v2.0 is installed on a seperate partition, it's a Linux program. When you re-format, or change drives unless you back up that partition you lose it forever since HP provides NO download links for it. As of todays date HP only has download links for "updates" to V 1.0, HP not providing a "Full" install of V 1.0.

If you run accross any info, post it here: http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=141817

jka/v,

Thanks for taking the time to post the info. Now it seems the last hurdle is going to be the QuickPlay feature.

Any more info you could provide would I'm sure not only be helpful to myself, but hundreds of others as well who are looking to do a clean install.
Especially us guys who are married /have a girlfriend and want to get the new install "done" before the wife /girlfriend finds out :-)

XP Pro dv800t / linux

Sorry guys...I haven't had *any* time between buying a house and work to mess much with the dv8000t. I did get linux up and running (with exception of the nvidia drivers...FC5 broke gpl binaries with the stock kernel and I just haven't had time to mess with it). For those that try to load FC5 on the dv8000t CTO's, be warned that the pcmcia drivers with this distro (and FC4 as well) are broken! There is an entry on fedora's bugzilla that tells how to deal with this (search for udev ...should be Bugzilla Bug #186164, entry numbers 18-23 or so). FC5 will hang during bootup on udev...but this isn't actually udev that's broke...rc.sysinit calls the start_udev script, which calls the startudev binary that in turn trys to create all the /dev/ entries (one being for the pcmcia device). The kernel will become mildly retarded at this point and just hang. Simply boot into rescue mode, remove the pcmciautils rpm, install the new one and it should boot just fine. The generic "nv" driver works for now. The ipw3945 beta drivers ( for this...there's an open source project with these and intel is supposed to release drivers based off these later this quarter) work with a little messing around. Sound just worked. The usb drivers may need to be modprobed manually in the modprobe.conf file. It's up and running pretty well and can compile a kernel pretty darn fast.

As far as the hp quickplay partition goes, I honestly (again) just didn't and don't have time to mess with it at this time. I actually killed those goofy hp partitions as soon as I got the machine (I don't have any use for the utility and, unless the restore disk can restore it, I don't have it anymore! As others have pointed out, HP has *really* dropped the ball on the software and driver support for this laptop so far. GOOFY HP

Regarding the essential updates...I just noticed that they've pulled them from the website. They've also just put up a BIOS release. I've actually been having problems with the xp pro sp2 (which was my own copy, *not* the HP supplied home edition) installation just rebooting every now and again for no apparent reason (no log entries when it happens or core dump). Seems that the mouse (or touchpad) will simply stop responding...I see some hard disk activity, and then about 5-10 seconds later, the computer will reboot. I've applied the bios update since the last time it rebooted (this afternoon) and haven't seen the same issue since, but stay tuned. Maybe there was something wrong with the "essential updates" given to us by HP. They are, afterall, a bit bananas!

If I get some free time soon, I'll just ghost my partitions and reload the HP partitions and see if I can figure out something with the HP quick play.

For those of you that have the "girlfriend" or "wife" that would flip out over wiping the drive...just tell them that you need a nice place to hide your porn... er.....nevermind. Bad idea.

Please...if anyone ever find out how to make a ghost image, or get the installation files for QuickPlay v2.0 please see this thread http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=141817 and help us! We want QPv2!!!

Please! Any help will be very appreciated!

Thanks!

For those of you that have the "girlfriend" or "wife" that would flip out over wiping the drive...just tell them that you need a nice place to hide your porn... er.....nevermind. Bad idea.
I'll trade you, I'm having to design, and build a house pretty much by myself... I know buying is a pain. I rode around so much looking for land before it got real cold the last part of last year I couldn't feel my butt.

On restoring the partitions, assuming the recovery discs will restore ALL the partitions.... if nothing else that would be "good" to know. (That it will restore QuickPlay).

I would think by reading your previous that posts that YOU, more so than anyone I've run across in a long while would be able to read the data off the partition. It appears that you are "well" versed in Linux.

BTW: I know it's maybe a stupid program, but I always wanted a $2,000 dvd/cd player with crappy speakers that weighs 8 lbs...

Seriously,... If nothing else finding a way to extract, and re-install QuickPlay v 2.0 would help to keep us married guys "married" if we can find a way to do it.
* * * *
HP pulled the "essential updates" for the dv8000t?... Wonder if they found some "problems"????

I see the essential updates are available for other models (dv4000)... and there is some source code for Quick Play located there as well....

Hey, since you're a Linux guy.... I would assume that if they release the source code for QuickPlay v2.0 that it could be used to develop a "install" program? (We'd be able to access/copy the files over to a Linux partition with a partitioning utility)

On more thing... What I've been thinking about doing is using "GHOST" to ghost the drive/partitions.... OR taking the drive OUT of the dv8000t, and installing it in my desktop SATA... to ghost the drive onto a spare IDE drive.

Any thoughts on that guys? Supposedly the SATA connectors are the same size???? (Notebook and desktop)...

PS: On the porn, clearing off the bloatware to make space.... 100 gig isn't big enough.

Well, I purposely didn't wipe the 1024mb partition in my hp, figuring that not touching it would not eliminate the quickplay functions. My quickplay still works, though it now boots to xp before it loads. I figure it's something to do with the actual quickplay buttons, and where they are mapped to. BTW, for those looking for the quickplay software, it's located in the c:\swsetup folder, under QPW Looks to be the software, and the registry edits for the keys...

RE: My quickplay still works, though it now boots to xp before it loads

Don't know the in's and out's of this program but it sort of defeats the purpose if you have to boot the OS in my opinion...

While looking for info for JL6speed on an issue he was having on his HP L2000... I ran across this guide for re-installing QuickPlay v1. It appears HP does provide a way to restore QuickPlay for owners of products that shipped with v1, so I see no reason why they would not be shipping a re-install disc , Or re-install program residing on the hard drive itself with products that have shipped with V2.0.

Just for the heck of it, try re-installing it. I would think that would reset the program and make it like it was before, QuickPlay working without booting into the OS.

Substitute CD for the QPW setup program you are refering to. (You may have to burn a cd and install it from a CD)

Keep in mind this is for v 1, I would assume there is a QPW "readme" file that goes alone with those QPW files you are talking about that would provide addtional details.
