Virtualization Solutions?

I'm running XP on my relatively weak Toshiba Laptop (512 MB RAM), but I'm interested in playing around w/ a Linux OS such as Red Hat or Mandriva, just to see if that's the direction I'd like to go in. I've heard that virtualization is a good way to go if you'd like to try out a new OS, but I'm not sure which software to use. I don't really wanna drop $200 for VMware, and I've heard Virtual PC can be pretty slow, which is a concern of mine w/ such a low-powered hardware. Has anyone heard of Parallels Workstation? I'd like some feedback/comments on it, so I know if it's worth messing with. Thanks.

I appreciate the recommendation, but I was really looking to try creating a linux VM. Has anyone tried Parallels?
