Widescreen DVD playback issues with Dell MediaDirect

I have a question about the size of the video playback (the letterbox black bars) when I play Widescreen DVDs using the Dell MediaDirect (PowerDVD) software. I can't quite figure out if it's a settings issue or what, but some movies play back with only very slim letterbox bars on top and bottom (much less than if the movie was played on a 4:3 TV or display). Other times, the bars are noticably larger (look like I'm watching a WS DVD on a 4:3 TV). This is all happening on WS DVDs on my 9300, so I can't figure out what the heck is going on. I've tried messing around with of the display settings in MediaDirect, but I'm at a loss right now. Any thoughts?

Anyone?

The DVD is being Resized.

Depending on the Aspect ratio the DVD was created in.
When it's resized the bars change size.

Do DVDs come in several different aspect ratios? I thought they were all 16:10? I'm wondering because some DVDs will have larger letterbox areas than others when they're both supposedly widescreen versions of the film.

DVDs of TV shows are mostly 4:3--almost square. The black bars move to the sides.

Cinemascope is 2.35:1 ( = 23.5:10), while HDTV's aspect ratio is 16:9.

WUXGA 1920 x 1200 pixels = 1.6:1 = 16:10.
