I am downloading the disk image, but I have a couple hurdles before I can install it on my DV4000 (EC681AV). I have two OS partitions so I have to backup and remove the second partition. In addition, my kids need to watch video on my laptop so I cannot take the risk to remove QP1.3DL right now. I'll try that next week and post my experience here afterward.

billcsho,

I'd be interested in hearing what you do to get your dual boot back up and running...

I've been trying for a couple of hours a couple of hours to make a fresh install act nice...

Have a couple of custom XP install discs with the programs slipstreamed, nlite'd in.... These custom disc of course don't have the correct SATA drivers it appears. I press F6 upon entering setup, pointed it to the SATA drivers... then I wipe clean (delete) the OS partition, leaving the recovery and QP.. (Mistake #1).... Anyhow.... Setup runs, format the drive, then it asks again for the SAME SATA drivers.... But this time it won't allow me to point it towards the "A" drive (USB Floppy).... So of course upon reboot I get the blue screen of death...

(Went thru pretty much the same thing on my desktop when I installed a 400 SATA drive... the workaround I used on that was to install the OS to an IDE drive, then image over to the SATA. Guess I need to look into nlite, pebuilder, Barts, etc...)

After doing that a few times with different install versions... Decided to try the HP XP PRO install disc... Installed no problem... BUT.... saw that the "recovery" partition was the "active" partition... My OS partition being assigned as logical.. and drive letter "D". Tried to change that via disk management -NO go.... So fired up (bootable cd) Acronis Disk Director Suite v9.0, build 524 to "hide" the recovery partition, change the OS drive from logical to primary, and mark active. It performed all ops, no problem, but upon reboot got the ndlr is missing message...

So off to re-format again...

I'm wondering if leaving in the "recovery" partition is going to cause problems with the QP install.... Probably need to just delete everything... Then use use Acronis True Image, or Apricorn EZ-GIG-II, v8.19, or Ghost to make my "own" recovery partition... The downside to take is the HP restore partition can be accessed via the F11 key... Haven't used True Image or EZ-GIG-II enough to know "how" you access the recover partition generated by those programs...

Two things I noted, when running some low level disc management programs from a bootable cd/dvd... the touchpad goes crazy... tried a USB mouse as well...
(running F.09A bios, supposedly the latest bios for a dv8000t)

One program was Acronis Disk Director Suite v9.0, build 524...

The second thing is the XP PRO install disc I received from HP did not ask for a serial number.... I wonder if each "install" disc they ship has a different embedded serial number or what... Or if the disc is the same and it looks at the CPU, the serial number of the different hardware and generates a number off that... On the custom install disc's I've used they can be setup so you don't have to enter a number as it's embedded..

Got to run.... Post how the re-enabling the dual boot goes...

Currently setup is copying files AGAIN, recovery partition "hidden" so I would assume my "C:\" drive will be "C:\" this time around..

Lots of fun doing disk management without the mouse... and using a program you only used a few times...

My dv4000 is the EC681AV (seems to be the same as yours) and I don't remember wich bios I had fist, but currently I'm using F12 01/20/2006.

I have a 100GB HD and I made a C partition that was only 15GB big, the rest of the space was unpartitioned, I installed WinXP Home and then I tried to install QPv2.

This is the message I got under WinXP:

And when I tried to boot with the QPv2 CD my laptop just got stucked.

ALLRIGHT!!!! I love you SVTSnake. I have a good install on my comp so no need to reinstall xp so all I had to do is pop it in the drive, then install, then reboot into QP!!!! YES!!! It works perfectly and it's amazing. THANK YOU!!

Hi, new to this forum, I own a dv5163cl and like a bunch of you deleted my partition and also quickplay. So, I've downloaded this version of quickplay and have created a cd copy. My question is how do I get it loaded back on my computer, do I still need a separate partition for it to operate from, i think maybe that's where I'm having problems. Please help.

READ!!! The instructions have been already posted.

I'm getting a "component move data error" when trying to install Quickplay 2.0. Is this because I don't have a D Partition on my drive.
Just RESIZE your C partition to whatever MINUS 1024MB!!! Then you will have a C drive and a 1024mb partition W/OUT FORMATTING (UNPARTITIONED SPACE)!!! Then pop in the disc and install and your good.

So far, I have only heard success story with DV5000. I have not update the BIOS on my DV4000 yet, but I basically get the same error message if I pop in the CD. It said on hp.com that the current DV4000 are shipped with DV4000. I wonder if they've changed the hardware configuration again. I remember QP2.0 was released around the time that they removed x700 from the video option. Perhaps it is now quite different with EC681AV. Let me do some more research.

Update:
I check the compatible model list for the QP2.0 CD using the part number, and I did not find EC681AV there. Perhaps we need the QPW directory files in SWSETUP before the installation. Can anyone post that here?
Wow this is really lame. I can't seem to play ANY of my DivX or XviD videos in QP 2.0. Someone please test to confirm but I cannot seem to use those. This pretty much makes qp useless to me b/c I don't really use DVDs and I have an iPod so the videos part was what I really wanted. Ah well...

Update: Ok just after I posted this I decided to test an XviD in QP 2 but in Windows. It booted up an dthe videos would play. The only reason I can think this worked is b/c I have the xvid/divx codecs installed in Windows, but I guess it doesn't load in the "Linux" part.
If that is the case, there is little benefit for me to upgrade the QP to 2.0. I can play Divx in Windows with plenty of players already. If the non-Windows QP video function only works for DVD, then it cannot play video files on HD or media. I thought that was part of the new functions. Perhaps they mean in Windows mode only.

Please help! Anyone, share with us that SWSETUP folder.

billcsho you misunderstood me I believe. I CAN play videos, just not any .avi w/ xvid or divx encoding. I can still play my wmvs and avi's that are not xvid/divx, it just is now pointless for me b/c 99% of my videos are xvid, divx.
Hi Chuck,
Thank you very much for the clarification. I also have most video files in rmvb and Divx format. I hope they'll implement the MP4 support in the future if it is not already in QP2.1 which is now pre-installed in the latest model.
lol qp2.1 already, maybe they fixed the bullshit with qp2.0. Hopefully they didn't have a d/l b/c they were gonna release 2.1 so y waste bandwidth? Maybe, probably not, but we will see.

Quick thing, anyone with a DV5000t like mine, can you tell me if your battery icon in the system dock in the bottom right, says how much time you have left. On ALL of my old laptops, it said the percentage and time left when you hover over it or when you double clicked on it. My laptop only says what the percentage is, not how much time is left on the battery. This is annoying for me b/c I like to know how much time I have so I can either dim the backlight or just turn it off.

two SATA drives

Hi all, I read the instructions for installing QP v2.0. First of all, thanks for sharing that copy!! Secondly, I've got two SATA hard disks on my dv8000t... I've got two drive letters, according to two partitions: C (corresponding to one hard disk, for OS purpose) and D (corresponding to the second hard disk, for DATA purpose). My question is, if I leave 1024mb of unpartitioned space in the first hard disk, it's not necessary to format everything of the second hard disk?

Thank you all and thanks again!!

Ivan.

My DV8000T does NOT show the time remaining, which to me is annoying as well! All of my Dell notebooks always showed how much time was remaining. I think the battery has to be made to support that feature, but I might be misinformed on that subject. I do however wish HP would figure out a way of making it work...

On the new super-duper dv9000t it shows the time remaining.... Got to buy one of those to get that feature...

You call HP, send them another $2,000 and they ship you one.. shows the time and everything...

All your Dell notebooks always showed how much time was remaining and the HP doesn't show the amount of run time left?

What was HP thinking? (not much it appears).
It goes off topic a little bit, but the remaining battery and volume level display are two of the mostly asked missing functions in many HP laptops. Recently, the volume display issue has been solved by adding two files from WinXP MCE. While the battery remaining time display still requires third party software like Notebook Hardware Control, MobiMeter, or Battery Eater. This also indicates the problem is not in the hardware.

Data and OS seperate... man you sound like me... Anyone who keeps their DATA on the same partition /hd as the OS is a largely a fool unless they image the drive on a regular basis: http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=154254

What I'd do is:

Power down unit, remove from A/C, remove battery. (I try to wait a few minutes, press the power button to bleed off any remaining power in the unit)
Flip unit over, loosen the three screws which hold the hd cover in place...
Remove second hard drive.. two screws, remove hard drive.

Total time about 2 minutes if you're SLOWWWWW.

Install QP, re-install 2nd hd.

PS: If your dv8000t ever has "problems" not booting from a bootable media... Press the ESC key at the HP Bios screen and manually select.

My dv8000t running the F.09A bios "lost" the abillity to "see" removable /bootable media ... had to remove the hard drive to get it back. Very weird the SAME programs, same discs just a few days before that were working just fine... No changes in the bios, nothing installed
