HP's QuickPlay v2.0 - Page 22

Thanks for trying... BTW, How large did it end up being?

One old school way to get around this might be to split it into mutiple <250Mb files.
Try RAR it into multiple smaller files. 4shared.com also provides 500MB free uploading space, but each file needs to be smaller than 25MB.

Help needed...

With the great help of AmigaDude's posts, I have finally installed QPv2 to my DV4000. But it is not working.
Program made a second partition with 1024 MB space.
When I try to launch it, it doesn't work at all... (By pressing "QP Buttons" or "Power and after QP Buttons")
So I decided to make a multiboot system and make necessary changes in boot.ini...

Bios Version F14
ATi X700

Tokuc, I probably should have warned you that would happen, since I tried the exact same thing. For some reason, which I'm still investigating, it does not like to boot that way.
my guess is that the bios temporarily changes the boot partition table to point to the 1GB partition, and QP depends on this. It seemed that after installing the QP/Windows code and running it, the Power key , 1/2 second, Music key sequence worked.

I have a Compaq V2000 with no hotkeys (except for volume +, volume -, mute, and wireless, Along with keyboard (fn) keys. Its a sempron processer with a phoenix motherboard. If I install QuickPlay, is there anyway I can get this to work? Does having it as a boot partition work? Is there anyway to edit the hotkey it wants you to press to start it without starting windows. I have windows xp home. Thanks a lot guys.

Uknown so far, but if you are ambitous and have a good backup, you can download the code for QP Direct and see if installs, then install QP Windows and see if it runs.

No, not consistently but I'm still looking at the code to see if I can understand why not.

Not without directly editing the Master Boot Record, and even then I'm not sure it would work. It appears that the code is using some undocumented Bios routine, but I'm still looking.

Any good x86 ASM programmers out there?

Second Try...

ludayoda, thanks for QPv2.1...

I have used QPv2.1 in my computer and after the installation successfully finished and restart, the computer gives an error message given below and does not start windows or QP at all...

Quote:
Intel UNDI, PXE 2.0 (build 082)
Copyright(c) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation

For Realtek RTL8139(X)/8130/810X PCI Fast Ethernet Controller v2.13 (020326)
PXE-E61:Medium test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM
Anyone knows what does this mean?

The computer only starts with O/S CD.

did you have version 2.0 before this? im not sure why it's giving u that error message. mine installed successfully on my dv5000, but i did this after i installed QP 2.0 using the installation cd. maybe its some compatability issue with dv4000?
I second the thanks for uploading QP2.1, I plan to try it a little later on.

As for the error, yes I got it once while playing with QP2.0. Basically, your notebook is trying to boot from the network since it has an invalid Master Boot Record (MBR). I can't recall exactly what caused mine, but I'm guessing that something got a bit confused.

- WARNING - You can screw your machine really easily, so please, please have a backup and only do this if you absolutely need to.

Easiest way to recover is to find your WinXP setup CD and boot from that. When you get the option, choose (R)ecover to get ot the recovery console. Then type in FIXMBR. Umm, here is MSFT's description -> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058/

Best of luck.

Oh yes, if this works you will have access to your WinXP install but will probably need to reinstall QP2.1 -- if you dare!

I think you are right about compatibility issue(s).
When I have tried to install on ver.2.0 but it gives an error message (since there is no unpartitioned space). So I have decided unpartition QPv2 partition and tried to install once more. And the result: QPv2.1 succesfully installed but gives the error that I mentioned before.
Compatibility issue

I think this is because I directly deleted partition of QPv2. Before I did, QP partition was the 2nd partition. Then I had a 3rd partition also (1st is Windows). When I deleted 2nd, I think 3rd becomes 2nd and new QP partition (which QPv2.1 created) becomes 3rd partition. But in MBR it was written as 2nd

Anyway... So I will try to re-install QPv2.1 to a clean windows If there is no compatibility issue, It will be successfull (I hope so...)

ludayoda and AmigaDude: Thank you both
Tokuc, when you do a clean install, I recommend that make only 1 partition (for windows). I have read that if you have more than one partition, QP installation can cause problems. Here is what I did:

1) backup any files and delete everything from hd (all partitions)
2) when intalling windows, create just 1 partition for the windows installation. however, make sure that there is more than 1024 mb left over on hd. Do not create a partition with the 1024 mb, leave it as unpartitioned and unformatted. If you are planning on creating more partitions later, leave more space free, but do not create those partitions until AFTER quickplay is installed.
3) I used the QP 2.0 cd from this thread to install quickplay. this created the partition and installed everything. there were some problems I had however with audio and whatnot (I mentioned this a few posts back).
4) finally I decided to install QP 2.1 from the hpqpdp folder. Without uninstalling QP 2.0 or deleting its partition, I ran the setup file for QP 2.1, and it installed on the same 1 gig partition that 2.0 was on (I guess it wrote over the files). this seemed to solve any problems I was having with quickplay, and it worked like it was supposed to.

note: you probably dont even want to do part 3, I think just intalling QP 2.1 should be fine (at least for dv5000t). hope this helps.
ludayoda, I tried to install QPv2.1 on to QPv2.0... But gives an error message: Error -27...... (Lots of numbers, someone post that error message back posts) Afterwards I decided to Install it without QPv2.0, and I don't know how to uninstall QPv2.0, so I unpartition that QPv2.0 space. (So that I have 1024 MB unpartitioned space, with C: for windows and D: for Master <- I think, this has to be unpartitioned also...)

Today, I'll try to install QPv2.1 on my clean system without installing QPv2.0 first.

If not work, I'll try to do the same as you did. But I think there is no need to install QPv2.0 first, because QPv2.1 is not an update, it is not required QPv2.0...

I'll post the results here...

Wish me LUCK...!!!

Is there anyone have X700 on is notebook??? In some other forums, they said QPv2.0 have problem with X700... But during the installation, it installs Radeon Drivers (although I don't know whether for X700 or not)...

Did you try "Power after QP buttons" or "Power and then QP Buttons"? I think only the latter one works according to Amigadude.

I don't understand what you mean but I tried both QP Button(s) and Power button and then QP Button(s).

What is the difference btw: "Power after QP buttons" and "Power and then QP Buttons" ?
Do you mean Power Button with QP Button(s) same time?
Because when I push QP button first, I get nothing...

I am using the same bios with one of my friends computer (Pavilion DV4000 series). He can install QPv2.1 but I can not... How can it be? The HP Guys did a very good job

The long number message typically means that you have too many partitions defined already. I think you need to have >1028MB available, and only a single C: partition defined. (yeah, it sucks but it gets you started).

It should install cleanly then, I guess..

tokuc,
I was just confused when you said "Power and after QP Buttons" and wanted to clarify whether you hit the power button first or last. Anyway, it seems you did the right way (power button first and then QP button, according to AmigaDude).
You have a much newer version of DV4000 than mine. Mine is EC681AV but it has the same CPU and graphic interface as yours. Your model number looks closer to the one I saw at OfficeDepot that has QP2.0 running, so you'll have a much higher chance to get QP2.x running than mine. Does yours come with F.12 BIOS, or you upgraded it from F.03? The sad thing is there are many different hardware versions of DV4000 with at least 3 different motherboards that use the same BIOS version. All the DV4000 with QP2.0 pre-installed are shipped with F.12 (F.14 now). Can you check the motherboard version of your friend's DV4000 and yours? Mine is 309E version 52.0C (according to Notebook Hardware Control). I wonder if this would give us some hints on the QP2.0 compatibility in DV4000.
As others pointed out and also mentioned in my original translated instruction (see post #191 of this thread), you cannot have more than one logical partition before installing QP2.x. You should probably backup your D: and remove the partition before installing QP2.x.

As promised, I reviewed the code in the MBR and it is not very promising. Here is my best quick take on what it does, mostly factual but some things are just inferred (Recovery stuff). Keep in mind, I'm using a DV1000 (1340 or something, I think) series machine but the MBR code is all the same.

MBR, installed with QP2.0
  1. Get last key pressed
  2. If (key code) is between 01h - 04h -> Save KeyCode
    Else Boot Normal
  3. Read 4 entries in partition table backwards
If QPLY is found - Save QPartition, Mark as NTFS Partition
If RECO is found - Save RecoveryPartition
If NTFS is found - Mark as Non-Boot Partition
    Read Next one
  4. If RECO is found AND RecoveryFlag is set
Unset RecoveryFlags in MBR, Mark as Boot Partition
Rewrite MBR and Boot Recovery Partition
  5. If QPLY is found AND KeyCode is 1h, 2h,3h, or 4h
Save KeyCode in MBR, Mark as Boot Partition
Rewrite MBR and Boot QuickPlay Partition
    Else Boot Normal (WinXP)
So, what appears to be the result, based on trying the Boot.Ini trick, is that WinXP Embedded (QuickPlay 2.0 boot environment) needs to see it's code on the Boot Partition - C: Drive in other words. The MBR code does that switching and rewriting of the MBR, but ONLY if it sees a key code of 1 to 5 hex. Theoretically one could mod the code to look for other key codes, but it will affect things later in the boot since QuickPlay knows which key has been pressed to bring up the appropriate screen (DVD or Music).

Might be worth a try at some time, but you would need to find the appropriate code that maps to another key. In any case, it would still require a 2-key press sequence, since only the Power key will turn most non-QP machines on.

A somewhat viable alternative might be to replace the code with another MBR so that QP could be chosen via the Boot.Ini selection screen. I think it would require a small program, on the C: drive, that alters the MBR, rewrites it, and boots to the QP partition. Actually, most of the code is already there, just needs to be recoded into a standalone progrram that Boot.Ini (NTLDR) can call.

BTW, before I forget -- QuickPlay 1.x does not use any of this. It must be hardcoded in the Bios to look for the 2nd partition since I can find no external reference to it.

About our dv4000 series laptops in Turkey

Well first of all i dont know why but the hp guys did a very good job and disabled quickplay on our 4000 series machines.(My computer is dv 4289ea)I personally tried every single way to install quickplay 1.x and 2.x both.Until now i was not able to install but after Amiga dudes post about the flag thing i tried it and i was able to install it(Though something weird happened during install i dont know if it happens to everyone while installing..I dont know the exact percentage but i think it was %73..When it reaches %73 then the setup starts a drawback until %65 i guess...Waits for sometime there and completes the installation after that normally..)And even after the quickplay sucessfully installed message i can not boot to qplay.(i tried every way power+dvd, power+music) So we need a solution..I have ati x700 graphics card..Amiga dude did a very good job and at least now we are able to install qplay...But we need to go further then that.. By the way thanks Amiga Dude and all others who helped again...

I've been wondering who else was going to notice that. The first time I saw it I thought I was imagining things, but its just a goofy install script that some HP developer put together.

Anyways, I appreciate the compliment - I'm just having a little fun finding what can be done. As for your situation, I don't know if it objects to the ATI graphics or not. I'd try installing the QP2.0 Windows code, its just 39Mb , and see how it reacts. It's the same QP code, just without the smaller Operating System environment.
