Well I recieved my G1 a few days ago, and here are my thoughts so far.
At first glance it's a beautiful machine. Other companies should take note. Pulling it out of the box, i must say, it was heavier than I expected it to be. It feels heavier than 7lbs? This is my second ABS machine. I ordered an m5 a few months ago, but had to sell it due to illness, hence the G1. Having had such a positive experience w/ ABS and the magnificent build quality and performance of the fully loaded M5 I knew exactly where to go for my new notebook.
Moving along. As for it being totally quiet??? I wouldn't exactly say that. The fans are quite loud, but that's to be expected w/ a 3.0ghz, 60gig 7200 P4 laptop. It's fast, and doesn't suffer bog down while running multiple apps. As for the screen, I agree w/ dashby. The clarity and quality is very nice, but a higher res wouldn't hurt.
The battery life is where dashby and I seem to have had different experiences. I'm lucky to get an 80 mins on a full charge. Kind of a bummer. You have to stay close to an outlet, and therefore have spent much of my time being plugged in. Speakers stink! Real tinny.. The WiFi button doesn't seem to work. It's always on?? Anyone know how to remedy this? Could this be affecting my battery life?
The heat isn't bad. It does get a bit warm on the left hand side, but nothing unusual. It seems to be well ventilated and the fans seem to do their job.
I haven't run any benchmarks yet. That's next. Let me know if you have any questions. More than happy to answer them since there seems to be a shortage of info/reviews of this machine. Not sure how the G1 stacks up to the Sager machines. I'm actually quite new to the world of laptops and hadn't checked them out in my research or shopping period.
Other machines I looked at. HP zd 5000/7000, Alienware 51, Voodoo(PRICEY), Hypersonic, Toshiba, Dell 8600, etc... I wasn't sure whether to go the Centrino route or the P4 route. I have a hard time buying machines w/ less processing power, hence the G1.
Oh, btw, I got my notebook 3 days after placing my order! What other company can do that? The guys and gals at ABS are awesome!
Biggest thrills: Build quality, Speed, Price.
Not so Great: Battery Life, Speakers, weight..??? so far that's about it.
Thanks,
Ks
