XPS M170 vs fully-loaded E1705

Let's assume for a moment that that 1705 eventually gets an nVidia 7800 videocard again (or even a new 7900) and that the occasional Dell coupon brings it to around $1600.

Dell currently has 10% off an XPS M170 with a 7800, making it $1800.

Is the XPS worth the extra $$$?

hi

i guess the 7800's are different version
uh 9400 hands down..

xps will have a gtx version of the 7900, 9400 will probably get the 7900go version.

the xps is ugly, and single core.

get the dual core already.

You can get the XPS down to $1649 by doing this:

I went to the Dell Home site…clicked notebooks and then to XPS.
On the right banner there is a “High-Performance Savings” box, red and black in color-click that.
Customize the XPS M170 (already has $350 off) and then I just went through the config downgrading the upgrades (that are included in the Dell price-2.3 M proc., more Ram, bigger HD, productivity software, etc.) to have the config and price that I ended up with.

I hope this helps, power to the people.
If gaming is your primary concern, I would go with the XPS.

You guys are totally negating that the XPS will no doubt be a COre Duo in few months unless they wait for MEROM to convert it to Core Cuo, then at that point in time the XPS would still be the best Gamer, but even after the switch to MEROM, the 9400/E1705 will still be a better overall choice due to Price per Performance comparisons.

I am with you, 9400 hands down!!!!
XPS still performs better in game because it got nVidia 7800 GTX.

If you primary focus is game, go for XPS. Otherwise, it is 9400 because it is lighter, has faster processor, and better band for the buck.

I'm waiting on the updated XPS.

Things I want to see: demonstration that the original XPS 2's can upgrade to the new 7900 Go Gtx, since I'll want a G80 when it arrives.

4gb of RAM limit - looks like this will be true but...

Other updates

Yes, undoubtedly there will be a dual-core XPS M170 update in the future. However, it will undoubtedly debut at well over $2500-3000. The XPS M170 single-core 2.0Ghz is now $1700, which is $1000 less than it was a year ago.

The question: Do I pull the trigger on this?

If you are wanting to wait for the next XPS and order it soon after it is released, you more than likely won't be getting it cheap.

i cant believe you all are missing mine/pcgeek04 point.

the xps line is just not worth the money. why would the guy buy an xps system with a single core in it, when the 9400 will perform almost the same? and with a possible upgrade in the future (people modded the 9300 to fit a 7800gtx)...

this is just in all honesty a stupid question to ask in the first place.

processor first, all other stuff second.

I am waiting for the new xps with 7900. I have heared that Dell will buy Alienware, and I think I will have more choices that time.

They already have...

You are missing my point as well. The M170 can be bought right now for $1700. Also, I cannot wait several months for the 1705 to get a 7800/7900, and even if I could, do you think it would be much less than $1700? The 1705+7800 Go was selling for $2200 a few months ago (= $1500 with a coupon).
Not to mention, the 3dmark 05 benchmarks for the XPS are 2500 marks higher, that is a huge amount more performance. Besides, when I play games, I'm not doing much else because I'm running balls out Max detail, 4 X AA and so on, so Dual core matters little to me. I think the XPS at this price is pretty amazing, imho.

I bought a refurb 9400 w/ 7800 go, 100gb hd, etc. (single core) yesterday on Dell outlet for $1075 after shipping and tax ($970 before)... so they still have some refurbs, it just takes a LOT of patience and browser refreshing to get the one you want...
yea sometimes i see -0- with 7800, sometimes like 10.

never wanted to buy one though, ill wait for the 7900go.

I found a super deal on the xps 1648$!!!!!!!!! i just ordered mine this week. heres how to get it: go to www.dell.com > click home & home office > click notebooks > click xps > scroll halfway down and click high performance savings (in red) on right side > click the m170 for 2,571$ > uncheck all the upgrades (dont forget the wireless card) > uncheck the software > uncheck the included backpack > click check out and YOU SAVED LOTZ OF $$$

PS: That includes a free DJ ditty and free shipping

HOPE THIS HELPS!

I went with the XPS for the 7800GTX.

Dual Core is great if you constantly multitask stuff that commands 100% cpu time (but really, just how often are you doing that?)

Multithreaded apps are simply not there yet for the population at large.

The way to pick a PC is to pick your most demanding scenario. For me it's gaming. I don't want a choppy experience in games, so for me the video card is most important. That's why my only choice was the XPS. Sure, the Core Duo may be a GREAT CPU. But the machine is essentially crippled as a whole if it has crappy 3d.

:yeathat:

but, when the xps 1710 comes out, then best of both worlds.
also when the 1705 gets a 7900 version, thattll be the machine to get.

the xps are cool looking, but the money needed to get one is insane. eople can have a 9400 with maybe a 7900gtx (one daY) for a fraction less.

i know some people make lots of money every year, but me, i like my Price to performance ratio's best.
