NX860X performance

does anyone know how well the NX860X performs in games? Does anyone have any reviews or benchmarks, b/c i con't seem to find anything??
It should be just a bit slower than the 6800go. Maybe a couple hundred points on 3dmark05. (With the 7600go of course)
That's what I'm after too, only in the 7800 flavor. A benchmark in 3dMark05 for the NX860XT 7800 bla bla bla would be LOVELY.

hi all, just got this a week ago. Right out of the box, with just how Gateway installed it. I bench tested it with the 3DMark05 shareware version and got a score of (3982). This seems very good to me. Just think, if i was to update drivers and such. What i could get...

That's actually pretty decent. Do you know if it is overclockable or not?
Hi,
As far as i know, it was not overclocked. Because it came fresh out of the box and i dont think Gateway would overclock it. And I didnt. Also I just receive a call from Gateway. They will be coming out to my home to replace the graphic card. There is a problem with them and they are replacing free of charge. Something about the chip failing on the card. (not the memory chips on the card)

No, I dont mean was it overclocked, I mean can it be overclocked? Some machines have hard-wired NO OVERCLOCK crap in them, though I've never had one that was that way.

Hmm...that post about it being really hot then...I wonder if it's a cooling solution issue? Perhaps it's not mounted right? I'd assume they'd go ahead and replace the card due to potential damage from overheating.

That's just a guess...but I'm curious if they'll cool down after the swap. Keep us updated!

mechawk, are you going to put up a review? thats a good machine you have there, and i'm sure alot of our users would like to know more about it. Thanks for the info!

Greetings all,

I will try to write one, once i have really put it through some more tests. Which includes a trip to Germany for 3 weeks. Im still waiting to hear from a tech that is to come to my home to repair this graphic card problem. I hope to be able to get some info out of him/her when they are here. I have played Lineage II and Counterstrike source a few times so far on it(game settings at high details). And happy with what I have seen so far. On the note of it running hot, I have had it get warm while playing those games. But not "hot", more like good warm. And from what I have read they get warm hehe. This is my first laptop and so my history is somewhat limited.

I'd like to know if it can be overclocked too, not the GFX card but the CPU. I don't feel like forking out $250 more for the 2.0ghz Core Duo while I can just get the 1.67ghz and clock it from 10x up to 12x.

I'm not sure about this but I think there all the same with different clocks.. if you look at the specs here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari...ocessing_Units they all look exactly the same just with different multipliers only.

edit: oh yea if you don't know how to check just press DEL when booting up and it will bring you into the BIOS, search around until you find something about the CPU multiplier or clock... It should be set to AUTO. Try to set it to 13x and that will make the CPU clock at 2.167GHz.

I don't know about the core duo overclocking, but I know Intel has done that in the past MANY MANY times, where they release something that is just a dumbed-down version of something else. However, the overclocking only works a certain percentage of the time, so there must be something in the unit that is slightly different. I don't know if asking someone else to turn their clock from 10x to 13x is real friendly. It might void the warranty if the company somehow gets wind of it.

When the graphics card is going to be removed, could you be so kind to take a picture from the slot that the graphics card sits in and from the graphics card itself?

That would really make me happy

Greetings,
I will try to take some pics, of the inside and the Vcard too.

I looked into the bios: Phoenix Bios version 72.02. I could not find anywhere to adjust that setting, for different CPU clock speeds. (F10, is what I had to press to get into the bios ) So I guess, that is not possible to do with the setup I have. There wasnt alot in there to actually adjust in there. I have worked in desktop PC's bios before and there is alot more in those then what I saw in this one. The best way to describe it I guess is "very basic".

I wonder if you can flash the BIOS with a different version to get it to have more options? Probably, it's just that Gateway doesn't want any noobs messing with stuff they don't understand, so those that do understand are outta luck.

Do you think you could pinmod it? Or are the Centrino Duos different?
As far as I know, the chipset is entirely different. They seem to all have the 945 chipset where the pinmoddable stuff has the 915. I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm just saying it'll most likely be different if it is possible.

If you're thinking of bumping a PM 533 mhz up to 667 mhz, it had crossed my mind as well, but the platform doesnt even support swapping those two chips, let alone modding one. I didn't search it real exhaustively but it looks like a different type of mod will have to be brainstormed.

Greetings,
Here are some pics of a Gateway tech removing video card on my Gateway NX860X (Sonic-C). I try to ask him about they troubles Gateway was having with this video card. But he knew nothing about it. Before coming to my home, he try to look up a tech manual for this model. And was unable to find one, because it was still so new. I benchmark tested it again and there was no change in my score....

Thanks for the pictures!
This is just to good to be true!

Do you know that you have there?
AFAIK the first notebook supporting a Core CPU and an MXM Type3 slot!

Btw. I talked to an employee from the upgrade-department and he had an (upgrade) tech manual for it

I noticed the NX860**'s don't come with a DVI port for monitors... I'm woundering if the VGA port works with a VGAtoDVI port converter.
