ACER 5672 is running too hot!

Does anybody have problem with the ACER 5672 running very very hot? I don't know whether it's a hardware fault.

When I have the laptop running for a couple hours or more, the bottom part of the laptop gets so hot that it's very uncomfortable to have it on my lap. So much so that my skin (I wear shorts at home) gets red from the heat.

In addition, when the laptop is being charged, the charger gets extremely hot as well - to the point where I can't hold it for longer than 5 seconds. I also smell a burning plastic scent on the charger. (My friends who felt the charger told me that it's abnormal and that they could also smell the strange burning smell on the charger)

Just wondering whether anybody else has the problem or maybe this is just how this laptop is?

how long have you had the laptop for??

right now for my laptop I'd had it for a 3 weeks so far .. I ran a guild wars in the background, ripping a dvd max 6x rip so far, mns, a few ie windows opened, and it runs pretty hot too I smell a burning smell but for me that smell I'd reconize because the metals are getting used to being heated up to thoses cpu heat tempatures. and for my power brick I'd had the laptop for the entire day it doesn't get hot, its just war,,., and also I don't usually my battery plugged if the laptop is close to a ac power source..

the psu might be faulty, get it checked out
they do get quite warm though depending on charge/useage

the 5672 is known for being a warm running laptop
the mouse glider gets quite warm and yes prolonged use on you lap will lead to discomfort, but that is general advice for most laptops

its difficult to get high performance and low temperatures.

The laptop getting hot seems to be fairly normal with this model, it is one of my complaints as well. I wouldn't say that it "burns" me, but i certainly don't enjoy having it in my lap for extended periods of time. Also the mousepad and area around that get fairly warm with usage. The power brick hardly has any heat coming from it, now that i would be worried about. Mine is hardly warm to touch atm.

the powerpack varies, sometimes its cool sometimes its really warm

I've had this laptop for about 2 months now. The power brick is generally warm only when the battery is fully charged and just supplying power to the laptop.

It gets extremely hot when the power brick is charging the battery. That's when it's almost too hot to touch and gets this electrical (and plastic burning) smell where the socket plugs into the power brick.

Does anybody know whether there's a repair depot in Vancouver, BC, Canada?

Uninstall the Acer power management. It runs the CPU at full power while plugged in. Windows power management will only fully power the cpu when necessary and your machine will be much cooler.

Will I still be able to have control over what devices I want turned on and off when the power brick is plugged in and when I'm in battery mode?

I'm having the same problem. my 5672 is prettymuch my primary computer so its on for a good 6-7hrs a day on AC ofcourse with the battery out.

I had a lapmate cooler so that helps keep it somewhat cooler, but i'm really worried because this was the same problem with my compaq and the reason i bought a new laptop in the first place... the old one would overheat to a point where it would just restart out of the blue... this one you can feel the heat come out of the side, but just below the touch pad it gets surprisingly hot! there a way to set the fans to turn on at a lower temperature??? so it runs cooler? or even have the fans on at all times?!?

That's exactly where my laptop is hottest, right below the touch pad. The other "hot spot" is underneath the upper right area of the laptop.

Hi folks...

Same for me... Until a I made a clean WinXP Pro install... Now, I can let it turned on all day long and see no signs of thattt old warm.
Maybe a bug, I don`t know, but formating solved for me.

Thx

EstevaoSoares: are you sure your machine is now running at full speed, without the power management the processor may clock slower by default, this would also make it run cooler by the way.

Hi there...

Well, I made a install of Acer ePower Management? There it says that everything is at full speedy. There is any other thing I should do?

Thanks a lot for the tip.

nope as long as the power (which seems to be system) management is working the other stuff is optional

the launcher is usually nice to get the extra buttons working and the nice on screen text for volume etc

This heat issue is getting me very worried. I will be using this notebook for school, I will be on photoshop, and 3d rendering programs for hours at a time. I dont want to pay for it..and then have it break down because of heat issues.
The only thing that will happen mainly with the heat, is that the machie may slow down a little to cool itself off.

there is much talk about shortening hardware lifespans when running hot, but this is hard to gauge in real life situations outside a lab.

if you are worried about it breaking down take out an extra warranty, in the past machines we have had at work have lasted over 5 years and more even when they ran extremely hot, some of the hottest machines we had (toshibas) are still running after 2-3 years with no problems other than the odd damaged hard disk.

My wifes laptop fan has just broken, but she can still use the machine (thank heavens for heatpipes) I am getting a replacement fan delivered next week, the machine is just over 2 years old

the heat is not that big a deal, it's normal joystik, i run autocad 2007, 3D studio max 8 and poser 6 on here, and the heat is not bad, only reason i think it feels so hot is the exhaust blows out the right side....onto my mouse hand..lol and then the fan is under that... so i mean, that's prolly why this is marketed as a "notebook" not a laptop...i think it clears acer of any wrong doing if someone get's burnt up..lol...but no it's not that hot. if i am just surfing or word processing, i use the epower mgmt program to drop the core from 1.6ghz to like 900mhz, which is just fine.

the 5672 does run hot, but to make sure it is not running too hot download NHC and check your temps. Mine idles around 51-53C, and after hours of gaming around 63 degress C.
As long as the temps dont interfere with the performance, it should be alright. i have heard that CPUs nowadays are tested to work on extreme temps and all, so their life span is great even at such temps.

I undervolted and underclocked a little my cpu, from 1.6ghz @ 1.45v to 1.5ghz @ 1.2 v. everything worked out and my max temp reduced from 84°C to 75°C and i could finally play without slowdown.

thats the issue with my machine, the cpu slows down to reduce heat everytime it reaches 84°C. in the end, my system started to froze when i tried to change the speed or voltage, so i stopped and decided it wasnt worth it to damage any data just to play WoW a little faste. i decided to get a new laptop soon.

Does the 5672 slows down its cpu due to heat? if so, im not buying it. when i mean slowing down to heat i mean during gaming or something, which was the main reason i disliked my Travelmate. if it doesnt underclock, i dont mind it being a little hot, because i dont think it will get much hotter than my actual laptop.

i don't think it slows on it's own, but we have the ePower app included with it, which when put on low, it drops the core to approx. 980mhz....weather or not it does both i am not sure, or just the second core. one way to for 5672 users to check this is hit your settings using ePower on the desired level. then right click on the My Computer Icon, and look at your Properties mine will say T2300 @ 1.66ghz 982mhz, 1.00Gb Ram.. it's a quick way or a freeware utility called Notebook Hardware Control, it can be found at http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...-Control.shtml it gives realtime information on your processor, and even has options to adjust voltage. and underclock it.
