No way is the X1400 faster than the go6800, I'm pretty sure it's about half the performance or alittle more. They used to have the go7800 with that laptop but they ran out or something. The go7800 is better than the go6800, I'm not sure when they're going to start offering it again.

Yeah, the 6800 is definitely faster. In fact, my friend just got an x1600xt for his desktop, and the 6800 in my 9300 SMOKES it.

for Dell... What the fu## means replacing the go6800 for the x1400... so, 9400 has a huge leak on the video card.. its just incredible..

The Radeon X1400 gets about 2000-2200 points in 3Dmark 2005; the GF6800go when detected optimal frequencies gets about 4000-4500 depending your processor, ram, etc...

remember the 9300 came with the x300 as a lower-end option, same thing here. except now lower is x1400, upper is 7800 go.

6800 = better than X1400
7800 Go = better than 6800 Go ultra (pretty sure)

Supplies of the 7800 are probably out in prep for the 7900 Go series. Being out of 7800 Go shows you just how popular it is. The new "arrival date" of the 7800 Go for those trying to get them is probably the rough new arrival date of the 7900 Go. I doubt very much there are any 7800 Go's left. (all referring to the non GTX model)

ATI x1400

It's interesting to note that, when I run the configurator on Dell's website, what I get for RAM is xxx MB Shared dual channel memory. That, plus the fact that the video card is 256 megs of Hypermemory makes me think that only 16-32 megs is actually on the card, and the rest is "borrowed" from system memory.

I suspect that's where the low scores are coming from; the fact that the memory accessed is actually system RAM, not the much higher speed video RAM

Here's a review of a lappy with a X1400:

As you may see, it doesn't have much horsepower

Actually, the performance of the 7800go is worse than the 6800Ultra at stock values; it seems the card is quite underclocked.
in fact, it is underclocked, but you can set it to higher speeds using the driver and it gets a bit higher scores than the 6800Ultra

When you customize a dell 9400/E1705 right now, you get to choose between an INTEGRATED Intel gfx card, or a radeon x1400. Arghh.. Is it worth it to shell out the extra $79, only for the option to spend another $249 to upgrade to a GeForce 7800? Maybe I'm missing something on the website, but the x1400 and the integrated card are the only options for the inspiron 9400 right now...

i think the 1400 only has 4 pipes.... not good
post #14 of 43
It is due to a shortage in 7800's Vanilla.

Could you put a 7800gtx in one of these 9400s?

It's not possible, 9400 has a different board layout than XPS M170 and 9300

Yes it is possible, it just takes alittle more work. If you look or ask around these boards you'll see someone has done it.

Yes you can! Just look for the main Dell 9300/XPS/M170 screen, and it will show you a thread on how to replace it. However, it is pretty involved and requires soldering, heating, changing shape, and possibly some breaking off of pieces. It is tough and not worth the risk in my opinion.

Supposedly all that is pretty easy. They even have a pic showing which piece to solder and remove. However, I've never done mods on a laptop and I wouldn't be willing to take the risk... So try it if -and only if- you're experieced.

To put the debate to rest on last time; I just got 1742 in 3dmark05 with an Inspiron 9400. T2300 1.66ghz Core Duo CPU, 1GB 533mh RAM, x1400 GPU. This is without a reformat or new driver install, however; so it is logical that it could push 2k. This is still less than half of the 6800go.
