vice city locks

Thread Starter
i've been testing out all of my games and vice city locks it up
i've never had this problem on my desktop...
in the first menu its like the mouse cant hit the on screen buttons
this can be bypassed by going Ctrl+Alt+Del and Alt+Tab'ing back in after which it works fine
but whenever i want to load a new game it will load in but the mouse wont interphase (eg. i just look straight ahead)
if i try and go switch out and back in it totaly locks
i've tried both the touch pad (ack) and my external mouse
just for the record i'm running no cd thanks to Alcohol 120% but i do own the game and this hasnt caused problems before
it also wont run even with the cd
the gta website mentions something about problems with the ati 9000 series of cards (that includes the 9600 i take it) and drivers but the problem isnt the same
when i first installed it (~3 days ago) it ran fine
i also dl'ed a 100% save but i already ditched that thinking it was the problem
any one else have this problem or a solution?

Mine runs great...but today it locked up on me once when I tried to use Adrenaline (powerstrip) to color correct it...If you are running this program try disabling it to see if it will run. You can also try some of Aurora's suggestions in my post about Adrenaline.

I know this hasn't been touched by anyone in a long time, but I have the same problem with Vice City. I looked at a lot of places but this is the only thread that targets this problem. Does anyone have any thoughts on this problem and how to correct this. I'm going to try this agian today evening after uninstalling the Synaptics touchpad drivers. I read someplace that this might help.

well it been a really long time since i posted but while i'm answering the pm about it i might as well put it here too

in the properties>compatibility tab for the exe file check the "run this program in..." box and select "windows 98/ windows ME" from the drop down menu

I have problems with several games locking up, for all of them disabling hardware sound acceleration is the solution
post #10 of 13
Thanks for the suggestions! I'll try these today evening.. Hope one of them works.

Do you have service pack 2 installed?? If you do you should try uninstalling that first.

Jusst incase none of the above fixed your problem I went out and bought an External Sound card (just a cheap 40 dollar one from walmart) and it fixed the problem as well. Now I dont have to change my Directx acceleration levels when i want to play those games that lock up

Sounds silly but I had the same problem with GTA3. I ran spybot and AVG. After a quick clean it ran fine.. I was using a copied version of Starwars Battlegrounds, my 51 had issues with someting it that apparently screwed up my GTA.

my lappie must have a conscience..
