Dell 8600 with Port Replicator Set-up

Thought I'd share photos of my Inspiron 8600 with the port replicator. The photos maybe grainy since they were compressed and were only taken with 1.55MP resolution from my 3-yr old Sony TRV-30. Gotta have one of those 5MP digicam.

Very cool.... thanks for the post. I have a similar type of set up with my Dell D800. The port replicator is amazing.

Yup! One of the reasons I went for Dell. I was thinking of waiting for the 8790 but thought I'd try Dell anyway. So far, I'm a happy camper.

Very yummy setup, Cyke! I really like that port replicator. It's so much smaller and sleeker than Dell's old versions. My 8600 is NOW supposed to be delivered on Monday morning. We shall see. If it arrives and performs as well as I hope, then I'll get one of those port replicators. I got my hands on clean (i.e., virus-free), pre-demo versions of Doom 3 and Half-Life 2. They should give me a pretty good idea of how well the final games will run on the 8600. If all goes well, then it's gonna take a whole lot of proof that the Dell 9100, XPS or Sager 8790 are undeniably better to convince me to return my 8600 in favor of one of those new notebooks.

Pre-demo versions of Doom3 & HL2!!!... let me know how it goes. If it's goes well, it'll definitely be a keeper.

Good luck on your 8600... hope you receive it tomorrow.

Pre Demo? Is that what were calling it these days?

Pre-demo, the politically correct way to say stolen.

What benefit does the port replicator have? I have no idea what it does.

That's right...I broke into both ID's and Valve's ultra-secret software servers and stole away their most prized code. You oughtta see what Quake 12 and Full-Life 10 (the "your eyes only" title of the 8th sequel in the Half-Life series) look like!!!

Golly jeepers, I guess Maggy smoked me out. I better book that flight to Uruguay before the jack-booted stormtroopers kick down my door!

You can connect all of your peripherals to the replicator and then simply plug your 8600 into it and have access to them. It's very convenient and quick. The second series of Cyke's photos shows his port replicator in action.

It's really convenient for me here in the dorm.... I can just undock it and bring it in my backpack whenever I am working with a group or whatever. Then it's 1-2-3 and I am back up and running in my room.

I think I'm going to need to order my Port Replicator .. Been using my scanner and printer recently and getting tired of hunting for the cables because they slid back behind the desk ..

Thanks Loki .. I had some people asking for a site dedicated to Dell users at a Dell Axim site I participate in .. Its had been a while since I was here last and didn't realise Talknotebooks.com had set up a Dell section .. They didn't have this last time I was here ..

You definitely need it in your case. I went for the port replicator for that reason and the fact that it has a DVI port to connect to my external LCD screen for dual monitor support. Plug-in... plug-out... that's all you have to do.

Okay, where are you guys getting the port replicator and for how much?

You can get it on Dell's site. It's in the Software & Peripherals section. Look under Notebook Accessories, and then Docking/Port Replicators. The price is $179, but will jump back up to $199 soon. Sometimes, you can find the PR on eBay, as well.

Update: I just looked up a PR at Dell, but they're still on a 1-2 week backorder. I ordered one, anyway.

I would appreciate information on the model # of the port replicator and AC adapter used for the Dell Inspiron 8600. I just purchased a new 8600. I also purchased a port replicator, model #PR01X, with no adapter on ebay. Supposedly this replicator is for the 8600 but Dell support tells me it MAY not work, whatever that means. I know the AC adapter that came with the 8600 (PA-12) does not work with this notebook and replicator. I'm sort of a computer hardware novice, so any help would be appreciated.

I may be in the market to sell my port replicator, but I don't know. I kind of want to upgrade to the D-Dock, which although larger, would allow for a PCI card such as a TV tuner. Then my laptop could be a portable TIVO also haha. Sounds good....I will let you all know if I decide to sell it.

I bought a port replicator directly from Dell and it definitely does not use the same power adapter as my 8600. I tried and got an error message about it not being powerful enough for the PR. My PR's power adapter looks exactly like the one for my 8600, but the PR only works with its specific adapter.
