dv5040us strange keyboard problem - Page 2

I received my DV8000t just last week and 4 days later I began experiencing this same problem

It comes randomly. I chatted with HP twice about it and they can't figure out what is wrong. Finally they suggested I send it back and get a new one.

Is it worth it? If it is a general problem with the DV8000s, how do I know my new one will not have it? It would be a pain having to replace it

I am wondering if I should just return it and get a whole other HP - maybe a new HP5000 ? What do you think?

Can you guys live with this Shift problem? Will the keyboard get worse eventually? Is this Shift key problem a sign that my keyboard just sucks overall??

The problem is related to the Synaptics drivers that come preinstalled. If you uninstall that software, the keyboard problems will go away. Unfortunately, that also makes it a pain to disable your touchpad if you use a regular mouse, but that is a small annoyance compared to the keyboard issues. Hopefully, Synaptics and HP will fix the problem soon. The laptop is great otherwise.

hp sucks

So I sent my laptop back while i was on vacation, got it back when I got home (minus a power supply). The return sheet says they replaced my keyboard and upgraded my bios. yay. 5 minutes into using the laptop my sticky shift key problem was back.

I bought a dv8230t two weeks ago and the keyboard was a nightmare. It would fail to register at least 2 or 3 characters per line, missing spaces and shifts, or the shift would stick (not to mention the capslock light sometimes worked in reverse.) In addition, it frequently doubled characters. All XP 'accessibility options' that might cause this were disabled. My typing slowed to a freaking crawl going back to retype so much. Seems I have to hit the keys just exactly so, or the key would go all the way down but not actually work.

When I took it back the salesguy convinced me to exchange it rather then get a refund, and the replacement machine is, if anything, worse. Ridiculously bad. I'm typing on my desktop computer right now, otherwise I would type you a demonstration para -- I have never used an HP keyboard before but I'm obviously not compatible with it. Doesn't sound like I'm alone:

So the replacement is now going back and it's very depressing. Aside from the keyboard, I absolutely love this computer, everything else about it is stellar and there is nothing out there comparable at anywhere near the price. I was SO happy when I first brought it home, I'd shopped around a long time.

Ditto - August already & HP still selling this junk

Just bought a DV5237CL at Costco on sale, and on day 1 notice that keyboard is acting up - I am a VERY good typist - I practice with headphones on transcribing song lyrics with my eyes closed. I've got a 3-yr old HP notebook zt3000 & never had a problem.
As soon as I started typing on this new POS, I thought, wow, what an AWFUL feeling keyboard- feels noisy, cheap, and then when it started missing letters I typed, I attributed it to the cheap cheap cheap keyboard.
Then, the CAPS LOCK appears engaged but the light isn't on - it's reversed....
Then, I decide to search the Internet and find that this problem has been going on for months.....
HP should be ashamed of itself for doing this.
I like this new notebook - pretty screen, seems fast, but with this cheap keyboard and apparent widespread problem, I think I'm going to return it-
Thank God for Costco - where you can return up to 6 months and get a refund.
On other forums, I've read many horror stories of people who cannot get the issue repaired, nor can they get their money back.
Sad, because apparently HP doesn't realize this will really hurt them in the long run.

I went back to Costco - and EVERY SINGLE HP NOTEBOOK COMPUTER THEY HAVE ON DISPLAY have broken keyboards - keycaps missing - their demo computers cannot even be used.

Oh, and the other thing I really dislike about the DV5237CL is that there is no way to disable the touchpad short of going into control panel/mouse/device settings tab and select disable. When at home, I like to use external mouse and find that my hands often pass over the touchpad in a way that makes it think I'm using it; my zt3000 had an on-off switch above the touchpad; if I turn it off on this new one, then boot the computer without external mouse, it is a major task to try and get it back on using only the keyboard to get to control panel/mouse/device settings tab-> disable.... STUPID!

My advice to anyone thinking of an HP notebook - don't buy an HPunless it's from a place that will GIVE YOU A REFUND if you find you're not happy with it.

dv8000t same problem

I have the exact same problem, I will be typing or using the mouse and all of a sudden menus start opening and I can't type.

What a pain but it definitely sounds like the left shift key is sticking, that is the shift key I use most.

I thought maybe it had to do with the FN key but the shift key is more plausible.

If you read the last page of posts on the dv8000 notebook review thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=57325&page=45 "abaxter" has come to our aid. He would like to post a video on Utube of the notebooks missing keystrokes. I'm emailing people who have posted having this problem to help with this endeavor. HP has now started to handle the problem by hanging up the phone on their customers as you can read on this thread. They refuse to honor the warranty and give a refund or replacement. Thank you for any help.
