high, a friend of mine wants me to put a new motherboard into his desktop, and im just wondering - how do i properly ground myself as to not statically shock the computer and ruin the whole damn thing?

i also plan on installing memory in my 5680 next week, and i dont want to shock my baby. is there anything special i have to do to ground myself or is it the same as with the desktop? you know how you get being over protective of her. hehe.

thanks for any help.

ps step by step instructions as if your talking to a 3 year old would be helpfull. THANK YOU!!!!

1. Go to radio shack
2. Buy ESD (Elecro Static Dischage) wrist stap

Its also a good idea to touch the metal of the case before touching components. The ESD strap will suffice for both desktop and laptop use.

Actually, if you look around, you may be able to find a cheap little tool kit with a strap in it. That way you can have the tools also

Forget Radio Shack,

Go to Costco and get a couple of the big rolls of heavy duty aluminum foil then go to a fabric store and get a pattern for a full uniform. Take it all home and make yourself a complete outfit of aluminum, don't forget the helmut just in case there are any voices or secret government programs going on nearby or your area is under attack by his A$$holiness, Emperor Wang, and his sex ray. Remember, improper viewing of uncased laptop naughty parts can lead to pron addiction and parts is parts.

Cut the ends off a 12 gauge, 50 foot extension chord and connect one end to your aluminum uniform and the other end to a 20' long, 3/4" diameter copper rod driven fully into the ground. Make sure there is a full 1" wide braided copper strap between the uniform and helmut.

Invite Breathe Nitrox over for emotional support and technical assistance.

uhm.... no offense but if you can't figure out how to ground yourself out, do you find you really should be putting motherboards in computers?

Easy, if you don't have have a strap on ( ) just touch a metal part of the case...such as the "frame" and try to keep a portion of your are on it or at least touch it periodically. If you do have your strap on (that never gets old) then clip the one end to the frame part.

My mom used to just *tell* me I was grounded, and that would take care of it. There was a thing Dad would do with a strap sometimes, too, but what you guys are talking about sounds a little different.

I also make sure any synthetic fiber rugs are removed and there is adequate humidity. I also work on systems with my shoes off. Once I start with the parts, I try to no move too much.

If you have a dog, call her over and touch her nose.

Seriously though, just touch the metal case. Don't wear wool. That's about it.

Touching anything metal should ground you enough. If you have a wrist-strap use it, but if you don't, no worries.

Never!! Ever!! Not even once! At all, even with both of my fingers crossed and all other failsafes engaged.

I don't care what they say, the voices or the government or anybody else. Besides, aluminum IS going to be the next thing. Absolutely!!

thanks for all the responses...... i decided to go ahead and go all out and do with marquis said (i dont want to screw anything up with my baby). anyway, what kind of paste do you suggest i use to glue the fabric to the tin foil? i cant get any kind of glue to stick, i mean its a real pain in the ass, seriously i tried everything. hot glue worked ok but then it started melting through the fabric and im not sure if its safe to just have bare tin foil hanging around. and does anyone have pictures of this? thanks for any help, peace

Lord I hope you are joking. A static strap will do just fine. Also dont go putting your new MOBO etc down on anything that might have an electrical charge, its not goog grounding yourself and then putting the mobo down on a power cable thats not properly shielded and frying it that way.
