My laptop has a removeable and replaceable video card...
I really don't want to buy another laptop as I just got this one paid off a couple months ago.
CPU, harddrives, and the rest of the features on the laptop are still plenty adequate for for most people, CPU can be upgraded as well, it has almost the slowest of the Pentium M series you can get at 1.3 400 FSB

the 2 highest powered cards that are avialiable for it are:

nVidia GeForce FX5650Go 128mb
  • Performs well, but has problems at times
  • Runs hotter than its ATI counterpart
  • Uses more power than its ATI counterpart
  • I already own this card

ATI Mobitlity Radeon 9600Pro Turbo 128mb
  • supposed to have FULL DirectX 9.0 support
  • runs cooler
  • uses less power
  • card is somewhat expensive at $175.00

As I understand it, both of these card have nearly the same performance other than the diferences noted above

Opinions Please

ALSO: I have dissassembled / reassembled many laptops so...I know it is a pains-taking process, but i can do it.

EDIT - Here are the current specs of the Lappy

Pentium M 1300 Banias
1024mb Corsair DDR333 (2x512)
60gb 7200rpm 8mb Hitachi Travelstar
20gb 4200rpm 2mb IBM Travelstar (hotswap w/ Windows XP Home Edition SP2)
15.4 WSXGA+ LCD
nVidia FX5650Go 128mb
Dell Latitude D800 touchpad
24x CDRW/DVD combo drive (hotswap)
Iomega USB 8x DVDRW
Logitech MX510 Red
PcLinuxOS 9.2

Leave it alone, unless you really feel like gettng a new one. No point in spending almost $200 for an outdated card w/ no significant gains.

and

What rep?

"Twink" is a term that came from the multiplayer online game crowd, it refers to someone who has had help from a more experienced player. "Twinkage" is just an extension of the same term. I got no problem with twinkage myself...in case anyone wants to boost my rep...

Rep is your reputation on the board you can see your reputation level by looking at the dots under your name. green is good red is bad, and all the funny colors are great.

Leave the bloody thing alone. It probably feels traumatized from all the diassembly/ reassembly you've performed on it...

And quit twinking your rep! It'll grow hair and fall off!

Black is "I don't care."

Anyway... yeah, I've never heard that term before either and I've been gaming online since Diablo 1 came out.

If you don't want to play i don't know what fancy games leave it as it is anyway you won't see to much diference. Ati has a much worse driver support then geforce ones.
And if you just bought it and you already want to change your cideocard, why didn't you got a better laptop from the begining???

I did not just buy it, I have had it for over 2 years...I just got it paid off!

I financed through Dell. original purchase price was just under $2200 the way i equiped it. at the time the 9600Pro turbo was not avialiable and the 5650go and 60gb 7200 were special order only - delayed my order nearly 2 months...I had already made my 1st payment before I got it. I bought it originally for portable gaming - at the time it outperformed my desktop

I checked my remaining balance due last december after getting some excess cash and found that after 2 years of paying $100-150 a month i still owed over $1500! I paid it off in december (find them all the time on ebay for around $500 - waa!)

I think I am going to leave it alone, I am kindof stuck with it anyway. My wife wants one, but as this thing wieghing in at over 8 lbs, she has decided she does not want this one.

thanks everyone for your input

I don't really think it is worth to upgrade your lappy. The Radeon 9600 is a good chip: will allow you to play most games out; however, it is starting to show age. Even mainstream chips today (7400/X1400) offer about twice the performance.

My advise is to sell it and use the money to upgrade since graphics power is important to you. There is a lot of people who doesn't need so much power and will be more than happy with the 5650.

Dell just released the D620. With prices starting at about $850, it's really easy to get a good configuration for about $1,200. Newer latitudes do have better build construction than previous generations and are quite faster.
