most dell printers are crappy lexmarks, you cant even refill the cartridges because the printer will reject it since its an "already used" cart.

my refil kit has 2 bottles of black, cyan, yellow, magenta, and its only costs $18, the number of FULL color pages you can print from it numbers in the THOUSANDS, ive printed 670 FULL page dvd case labels, and i am still waiting for the first refil kit to run out while a fresh backup kit is waiting. i still have a FULL bottle of black, and magenta. these arnt small bottles either, they are HUGE!, check out this picture from IMS (its avalible at costco)

Laserjet 4 for the win man. Mine is a Laserjet 4m+ (supports more RAM and came with a Jetdirect card for 10BaseT and Appletalk) I bought mine over a year ago at a Department of Energy Auction for $25. Paid $54 for a recycled cartridge, then I upgraded the RAM to 38MB. 215,397 pages on it and STILL going. Firmware Datecode 19931201. I have a LJ4+ in my Garage that I need to clean up that has 12k pages on it.

For my color printing needs I have an HP Color Laserjet 4500DN purchased at the same government auction for $25. All I had to buy to get it working was the Imaging drum ($70 for a brand new one on eBay). I ended up buying a Jetdirect card for the printer to replace the one someone had removed prior to the sale. I did have to buy a refilled Black toner cartridge a week ago, but the other 3 seem to have plenty of toner still. Prints photos quite nicely.

Where the hell did you find these auctions?

Way to necromance a thread, but I guess I'll give you an answer. Amarillo TX is home to the BWXT Pantex Plant. A facility that used to be final assembly for all the United States' Nuclear Weapons. It is now a facility that disassembles the warheads and stores the Plutonium.

Anyway, the government can't just throw anything out. Every piece of equipment that is of no strategic value must be sold to somebody who then disposes of it. Really, finding the auctions depends on what kinds of Government facilities you have in your area and what auction house they contract with. The Department of Energy contracts with a local company to auction all of Pantex's old equipment, and we are fortunate enough that the auction house just doesn't eBay all of it. The one problem with a government auction is that if there's any unsold items, the next person that bids on an item and wins it gets to buy all the crap before it that DID NOT sell for $1 a lot. I hauled back twice as much junk as I did printers from that sale. However, I managed to get a working UPS with a dead battery for $1 that still works. The best place in the country would have to be Albuquerque due to its close proximity to Los Alamos and Sandia national labs. Those two labs ALWAYS are disposing of surplus equipment that isn't that old.
